Help with Low Fuel Light Blinking

Folks

My 98 T4R is having some fuel sending unit issues.

The vehicle has 290k

Fuel tank is 1/2 full. Fuel gauge shows tank is 1/2 fuel.

And yet, the low fuel light on the dash is coming on. It is not sold it tends to be blink (turning on and off intermittently). Mornings when it is cold outside tend to make it worse but I've seen it at all times of the day and in all temperatures.

What do you think the problem is?

How would you go about diagnosing the problem?

I'd be happy just to disconnect the light altogether since I never let the fuel get below 1/4 tank.

Many thanks! Rob

Have you checked for a loose ground or bulb? Possibly a frayed or exposed wire in the circuit?

The light comes on as the fuel sloshes around??

I've inspected underneath the vehicle. This T4R is very clean and I didn't see any wire damage coming from the tank to the front.

I haven't checked the dash. I do need to tear into it to replace my antenna and replace other dash bulbs that are out. I can check it then.

Great suggestion, simple, I didn't think it could be the bulb. My anxiety said, oh grap, the sending unit is going out.

I filled the tank FULL, gauge registered "F", but yet still the stupid low fuel light came on.

Actually the light flickers even when parked on a flat surface.

Thx for helping me with the problem.

Is it really the low fuel light being lit ?? Or is something grounding through that circuit lighting the bulb ??

What is really strange is according to The EWD`s for 97 and 98 4Runners that uses a Thermister to send the signal to the light.

Unless you can find a problem in the combination meter and can`t find a damaged harness pulling the sending unit can be a pain

This link has a great description of the thermistor. It sounds like it is bad, or going bad, or I have a ground problem somewhere.

Interesting thing is that this problem appeared when the weather turned cold.

Thanks for your input
