Yeah, pulling codes is easy you'll just have to look then up and sometimes it just gives you an area of things to check. Sounds like water got in the coil packs for the plugs...

 

I think im gonna replace the coils tomorrow. Any suggested brand?

ok so the plan is to replace the plugs and wiring tomarow. Can i get NGK's at auto zone, and what kind of plug coils should i be looking for?

 

Try plugs and wires first. Coil packs are $80 and are probably unnecessary. I had the same issue (code was a misfire in one of the cylinders) and just did the plugs and wires. Fixed it completely.

Use some dielectric grease on the plug wire to plug connections and you'll never have to worry about this again.

 

You likely don't need to replace anything (unless your plugs and wires are due to be changed anyways). Unplug your spark plug wires, and check for water around the plugs. It happened to me. I had less than 1/8" of water down around one of the plugs on the driver's side, and that was enough to cause it to mis-fire. I got rid of the water using a piece of paper towel to soak it up, then I blew it dry with compressed air, added di-electric grease in all the spark plug boots, and re-installed them. Don't forget to clear the codes, then fire it up.

 

I did the samething on my T-100 a few years ago..It run bad for a few miles and then it took a fe days to run like a champ again..You got water some where it did not belong...

 

So i pulled out all the plug coils and there was water on all of them. So i dryed them off and stuck a paper towel down there to the plugs to get anything that was still there. it ran a little better, but still very rough between the 1500-2k rpm range. any other suggestions. My parents are just saying go take it in (its thier car).

 

BTW plugs were replaced 10,000 miles ago. Should i just go ahead and replace them anyway?

 

There's probably still water in there, keep some paper towels in there and let them absorb the water for awhile. I did the same thing to my old car and after getting all the water out everything returned to normal.

This happened to me when the detailer blasted the motor w/ disregard. The truck ran horrible and displayed symptoms you described. When we pulled the plugs, it was all gunked up. Changed out the plugs (that I bought from the dealer) and all was well.

 

So went and got some NGKs from kragen today thinking spark plugs were spark plugs, i guess not. I guess im going to have to go to Toyota tomorrow and grab some dual ground plugs. .044 spacing correct?

 

What was the CEL code? (maybe I skipped over it - but it sounds like you went to coils/wires based on feedback not on the CEL data)

 

.044 is the correct spacing, but you WILL have to regap them.

x2 on the CEL code.

 

i hope you didint use a power washer ? i clean mine just about every month i use garden hose and a leaf blower to get rid of most of the water then let it run for a little while and no problems

 

Might try cleaning the MAF. The CEL codes would be a big help.

 

Dry it out the best you can then drive it around..The heat from the engine ill dry the rest out it will take some time but will run better...I did the samething a few years back..Ran like crap could not get past 30mph dried them off and ran rough for a while but dried up and ran like a champ...

 

well im installing the new plugs today $3 from the dealer then hope fully its drivable then ill drive it to get codes. Its a PITA to pull the plugs when the socket i have deonst have that little rubber thing in the top

 

swapped the plugs and its good as new. Thanks guys. No more v8 4gen for me now o well
