HELP How do I get starter off !!!!

Ok guys, here goes I have a 1998 4RUnner v6 and I was experiencing starting problems all of a sudden. I would turn the key ..nothing:pat: then turn the key immediatley afterward and the truck would start!?!? A few buddies told me my contatcs were going bad and to either get the contatc kit or just get a whole new starter. Well CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW IN THE HELL TO GET THIS THING OFF!?!? Any one have a scanned images from teh Repair Manual on this.

I treid for over 3 hours tonight and all I did was really screw the damn thign up. There is no room whatsoever to get that thing off. I tried removing this bolt and that botl to get to it, going through the wheel wheel, on top of the engine, down below. I managed to get the 2 screws off holding the starter, then I noticed that there is some sort of cable/plug going to another module that sits right next to the starter unit itself. I tried taking off 3 very small bolts on that part where the cable was coming out of and all it did was take of this small gold cover nothing else.???

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what year vehicle? What engine?

If you are going to say 3.0L V-6 in a 88-94 Truck/4-Runner, I wish you the best of luck. Even those challenge experienced technicians.

But here we go....

( Applies to all models.)
1. Remove Negative battery terminal.
2. Remove the Large wire thats bolted to the starter solenoid. (12mm socket).
3. Remove the smaller wire ( depress the locking tab on the connector and pull )
4. Remove both Starter to Bellhousing Bolts. ( 14mm socket with swivel )
5. Remove starter from vehicle.

Additional items per model
3.4L V6
1. Remove the bolt holding the brake line in place (accessed thru the wheel well.) This bolt is on the inside of the frame facing the engine.
2. While sticking your toungue out and making that funny face, pull the starter out from between the exhaust manifold and the frame rail.

3.0L V6
1. Disconnect the wire harness from the metal bracket ( accessed thru the wheel well . )
2. Using a long pry bar, pry upwards on the motor mount to lift the engine enough to be able to wiggle the starter out. ( I suggest a helping hand ).

2RZ-FE / 3RZ-FE 4Cyl
1. From the top, relocate hoses and tubes temporarily to be able to bring the starter out from the top. This is a tricky one to do also. Take your time, rotate the starter around until you figure out how it comes out.

22RE
1. After taking the lower starter mounting bolt out, move the Hydraulic clutch hose braket out of the way.
2. Remove the starter from the bottom.

As for putting in the new starter contacts.....

1. Remove the (3)small gold screws from the starter solenoid.
2. Remove the Contact plate plunger and spring.
3. You can now see the contacts inside the solenoid.
4. One at a time, disassemble the Contact fastener, carefully looking at each piece, and setting them down on the bench in the order they are assembled.
5. Install the new contacts, MAKING SURE THEY ARE FLAT IN THE SOLENOID. (Place the old contact on top of the newly insalled contact, using a screw driver and hammer tap downward on the contact to insure its flat.)
6. Reinstall Contact plate plunger and spring.
7. Reinstall gold cover and screws.
8. Reinstall starter.

you are reallly messing things up it sounds like

There shoud be a nut on a stud that sits on your tranny and a bolt on the bottom side of the starter these hold your starter on to your vehicle

there also is your + battery terminal wire that goes to it on a post remove that and on the other side of the plug/clip there is a piece of it you must press to release it

It sounds like you have pulled off the starter solinoid

You should be able to see inside your tranny when the starter is removed or at least you will see a big gear this is your flex plate

Anymore questions im sure someone can word that different or tell you better than i did

THanks Guys I ahve the 3.4 L V6 MOdel from the 1998

Ok I get the part about removing the 2 screws off the starter body, they are real thin and long DId that.

Did the part about removing the big terminal from the starter

Did NOT the part about remvoing the small clip from the other part on the starter, How do I do that one, it is a real small clip, do I push 'IN" with a small scrwe driver or do I push the clip "out"

Yup it sounds like I took the cap off the solenoid and there was indeed a plunger in there. I CAN"T get this last and Final piece of the truck? It looks like they come off together!?!?

I see a scrwe buried in there but the tranny bell won't let me access it? Is that the one I need to get off? ALl along I have been thinnking there is a plug on top of the solenoid that I have to unplug, I can see this is not the case, I have some more bolts to undue now, but which ones for the starter solenoid?

Also I really messed up my starter, now when I go by the new part, do I get BOTH the starter and the solenoid? do they both come together or is that extra?

Uh oh..... NOT THE LONG THIN ONES. That would ultimatly remove the solenoid from the starter. Dont do that.

The bolts that hold the starter in place will require a 14mm ( close to a 9/16) socket.....

WTF!?! THat's ALL I needed to do was remove 2 frigin bolts of the TRANNY!?!?

This is for a 1998 SR% V6 3.4L enging eright?

I just don't see how it came off with these two bolts, believe me I am not arguing, but I thought the starter was hooked on the car with those long thin blsts.

Just ask for a starter.

I suggest buying a remanufactered starter. Im not sure if they will give you credit for yours. ( unless you can mostly put it back together. )

JAY ! Thanks so much, I finally got that sum mum of a bitch off

I t was really tight to get to those screws, I had to use a wobble swivel extender for my 14mm socket. I think I got them back on there tight.

There is too much going on down ther to get a good ratchet in there with all the hard fuel lines and exhaust hanging down..shessh.

Thanks buddy!!
