HELP!!! Fuel system problem on 22RE
I recently bought an '86 Runner and it has a hopped up 22RE motor. Supposedly it has an adjustable cam gear and the head is shaved some. Here is my problem......when I am driving down the road I smell raw or fouled out fuel. Also when I am driving at a constant speed the check engine light comes on and then I can shift gears or give it more gas and the light goes off. The motor has good power and idles like a dream but I am only getting like 9 mpg. The air flow meter looks like it has been taken apart and the plug over the adjustment screw has been knocked out and you can tell that someone has been tuning it. I dont really understand why anyone would take the thing apart when I understand that it only measures the incoming air. I am wondering if that could be my problem or if could be my throttle position sensor. Can you test an air flow meter? if so how and what am I looking for? Also can you test a throttle position sensor? I really need some help.

You can test the throttle position sensor, do a search its been posted a thousand times before.
I believe that the CEL that comes on at a costant speed is probably related to the O2 sensor, what code # is it giving you? and what RPM is it happening at (Im guessing around 2300, thats when mine does it )
Some people mess with the airflow meter to make the computer feed the motor more gas, which probably explains the raw fuel smell you are having and also your horrible gas milage. No way I know of to find the stock calibration once its messed with.
