Help Disable DRL ??

I have looked through the search feature and can not find what I'm looking for. Crawled under the dash and what did I find? Not the box that eveybody else has shown in there write up's. Now you have to take in to consideration that my runner is from Canada and I don't know if they have a different wire diagram. I even went so far as to take out the fuse in the engine compartment for the DRL's and they still came on when I started the truck and dropped the e-brake...I also looked behind both the kick panels and the only thing there is 4x4 module and ABS module. Any input would be great Thanks Doug

My 2000 didn't have anything under the dash for DRL. My DRL unit is in the engine bay, right next to the battery, mounted to the fender wall. A little black box with vented slits all over it. I just unplugged that unit and no more DRL. I don't know if it would be the same for your model, but it's another place to look.

Same for my '97. It was ;-) in the same place. My horn for my alarm is mounted there now.

I'm curious why Toyota issued TSB #EL011-00, "Daytime Running Light Disabling Procedure" that has you cut wires (remove pin from the connector, actually) if it's as simple as disconnecting the plug at the box...

I don't know if each year model is somewhat different.
I know that my 98 runner was built in Japan and ended up in Canada.
Go figure?

As an alternative, because I do like driving in the city with DRL's, especially in Seattle when it is rainy/foggy, is wired up the DRL's to a switch in the cab. So, I turn them off when offroading, but leave them on most of the time.

i thought about that David, but wouldnt that be just like using your headlight switch? whats the advantage of having another headlight switch?

It's not really a headlight switch. The lights are controlled by the ignition.

I agree that there are a lot of times I prefer to have the DRL's functional. One situation is in foggy conditions where I have the fog lights on and can lower the headlight output to DRL levels. I don't get as much headlight glare but still have a decent forward "throw". Of course, that's dependent on the particular conditions and the amount of glare I can tolerate. Then there are the times it would be nice to have them off w/o having to turn off the engine and restart after fiddling with the emergency brake... Like at the Drive-in movie or campground.

yes but if you leave your headlight switch on, the lights turn off/on with the ignition, too.

Mine don't, at least on the 98 I could still drain the battery. It's a no-brainer to leave the DRL's on. Boils down to a preference thing I guess, just throwing another option out there.

hey david

just wondering if you would send me a diagram of the switch/wiring set-uo you used. im going to check and see if the black box is in the same spot on my 93. i like your idea of being able to selectively turn the drl's off. thanks in advance.

hey ryan

i believe transport canada made drl's mandatory in 91 or shortly thereafter. my 91 corolla had them (i think), my 93 mr2 definately did, my 94 corolla wagon had them and the 93 runner has them also. i found the fuse under the hood for the drl's but no black box. didnt bother pulling the fuse as it doesnt disable them as per a previous post. anyone have any ideas as to where the unit may be hidden?

no worries ryan, i guess i should have ended my sentence with 'eh'! just wish some of the stuff available for you folks was available here. the duty, taxes, shipping etc make it cost prohibitive sometimes to order from south of the 49th. talk with you soon, eh.
