Today on my way home from work the truck was good until I got almost home and it had a hard time going up a hill. The rest of the way home it wouldn't let me go past about 1/4 throttle.

When every you press the gas more then a 1/4 it would want to die out. At a stop you can rev it to the red line slowly but if to step on it and sounds kind of like a back fire.
I haven't done anything yet expect try a figure out whats going on.
- All vac hoses are good
- No plug wire broke or off

I did notice a little oil in the air box and on the filter.


I use this truck as a daily driver so if I don't figure it out and it dies on me to work tmr I'll be walking. (Its 50 km's to work)

Any ideas anyone.


Its a 96 Tacoma with the 3.4 in it by the way

Dumb question, but is it throwing any codes?

I assume there's no mechanical blockage with the throttle cable keeping it from fully opening the throttle body, right?

Have you tested the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) and IACV (Idle Air Control Valve) to make sure they're good? My 3.4 (from a 97 4Runner) would back fire when I let off the gas and wouldn't hold a consistent RPM while they weren't making a good connection with the ECU.

Have you checked your spark plugs?

Any smoke out the tail pipe? Blue typically means oil (rings or valve seals), white typically is coolant (head gasket).

Haven't checked TPS or IACV yet will do next.
Was going to pick up some new plugs tmr but no I haven't check them yet.
No smoke first thing I looked for.

But I have a bad feeling my rings are going cause there is some oil in the tail pipe.

when is the last time you put a timing belt in it? sounds like the timing belt has jumped a couple of teeth.

how does it idle? if it idles ok then you can rule out your spark plugs. if it had a bad plug it would skip and run rough at idle.

I'm gonna jump in here and say your fuel pump is going out. Without putting a gauge on the manifold I'm just guessing but it sounds like it starving for fuel.

Agree... replace fuel filter... But, that dosent explain the oil on the air filter, so also inspect/change your pcv valve.

If it still does it after that, compression test...

So the engine light went on this yesterday. Code P0171 System too lean (bank 1). I changed the fuel filter last night.
I tried spraying some intake cleaner into the MAF sensor to see if that helped didn't do much.
Still having the same problem.

Also after work today I pulled codes again and got a list,
- P0171, System too lean (bank 1)
- P0300, Random Misfire Detected
- P0301, Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
- P0302, Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
- P0304, Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected
- P0100, Mass or Volume Air Flow Circuit
- P0110, Intake Air Temp Sensor 1 Circuit

Sounds like the MAF has failed.

MAF sensor could be an issue too. You said the intake is full of oil well that's a problem. it needs to be clean. Spray off the maf with maf cleaner. You really need to check the voltage too. Scan tool or tuner and compare that to Manufacturer spec. simple maf test,take it out put a voltmeter on it,tap it or put a hair dryer on it to heat up the element if it goes out of spec,it's fried.

It makes no matter if the maf is good or not at this point. You are getting oil in your intake... figure out why before throwing another maf in, or you will just toast the new maf in short order.

I'm still betting pcv valve, so check that out. After you figure out the oil in your intake, you will likely need a new maf... they dont like that carb cleaner stuff, and if it was coated with oil, it was on its waay out anyway.

Worked on the truck a bit this past weekend. Nothing has changed really.
I checked the MAF with a multimeter, it seems to be reading within spec.

When the truck is idling and you unplug the maf sensor the truck dies, is this right?

But "Team420" is right I need to figure out why I have oil in my intake, do you guys have any ideas why?

Some oil is normal because the PCV system recirculates oil vapor thru the intake. Post a picture. I'd bet its the normal amount we all see over time. FYI, don't clean it by spraying it down with cleaner. You'll screw up the IAC and end up with the high idle issue. Wet a rag with cleaner and wipe it clean if you feel the need to clean it.

Yes,unplug the MAF the truck will die. That's normal. The oil in the intake isn't normal if it's a lot. a little, not an issue. I still think your fuel pump is going bad. Put a gage on the manifold.
