Help!!!

Hey guys... I've noticed that when I'm turning on a bumpy road I can hear kind of a clunking sound... Anyway... I get home and decide to put it in 4lo just to see (I thought it might be something in the front diff). Anyway, I'm just going in a straight line and as I accelerated (not too fast but slower and smooth), I notice that my engine speed seems like it's rising too fast for my actual speed... the rpm's would get up to about 2500-3000 before the 4Runner actually started accelerating like it should (in 4lo)... sorry about all the posts lately and this long one. BUT IF YOU COULD PLEASE HELP?! THANKS!

honestly sounds about normal, 4lo introduces a whole new set of gears that the truck normally never sees, and people arent used to it....

Thank you for the sarcasm! It's not like I haven't put it into 4lo before. Maybe I'm just worrying, but it seems to feel different than the last time I put it in 4lo, this LAST SATURDAY. But, maybe I should have read the F#$$ing Manual.

clutch slipping? that's my guess.

oh if you tested it on the street, it is a lot harder on the drivetrain and will make it feel rougher

well if its getting too 3000 rpm without the vehicle moving then you have a problem.....could it be clutch slip? how does it run in 4 hi?

in 4lo on level terrain the vehicle should be moving at idle....around 500-700 rpms....

well, i'll test it after work... in 4hi it runs fine... i'm thinking it might be clutch slippage. in 4lo though, it still gets up on rocks and curbs really easy... so... also, it moves in 4lo at low rpm but engine speed gets up there faster by a long shot than actual speed.

Yeah, it very well could be clutch slippage, but if it gets up on rocks and curbs easy, then it might not be. I'd check it out though.

Not trying to flame, bash, whatever you want to call it, but there have been times I've got in my truck, put it in 4lo and go woah. I find that if I havn't used 4lo in a while it will feel very weird when I put it in it again. Just a thought.

4Lo will really push you into the seat when you accelerate since it really multiplies the torque. If you're not feeling that, then try reving the engine in 1st or 2nd and see if the rpms climb faster than the speed. If so, it's new clutch time.

if the clutch does not slip in hi-range, then it wont slip in low, not as much load on it

the rpm's in first do climb really fast... the last time i put it in 4lo was like on saturday. Anyway, the way it used to ride in 4lo would really put me back in my seat when accelerating, as gwhayduke said. Anyway, on saturday i accidentally forgot i was in 4lo (i was thinking i was in 4hi) and started accelerating more rapidly than i would have had I know i was ACTUALLY in 4lo... the truck jerked forward, i let go off the accelerator and then stopped... i then realized and put it back in 4hi. do you think something could have broken? I'm really hoping nothing snapped... but as i said in the first post "I've noticed that when I'm turning on a bumpy road I can hear kind of a clunking sound"... do you think the diff gears could have broken? i just thought of that... considering I JUST started hearing that sound. *idiot! idiot!*

Ahhh...now I understand. Drain the diff by pulling the drain plug. Of course you'll have to put fresh gear oil in afterwards, but the plug is magnetic, so any small chunks of steel will be adhering to it. You can also watch the oil as it comes out for chunks.

so you think my gears may have broken? If they have... where could I get some more good ones? (if you can just replace the gears.)

Now you don't understand. You gave us data, asked us if your diagnosis was correct. We gave you a way of getting more data to find out if your diagnosis was correct. Now you're asking us to diagnose it without providing us more data.

Ya gotta get under the vehicle and twist a wrench on this one son. If you drain the diff and you have metal chunks in there, your dignosis of broken diff was probably correct. But no chunks, probably no broken diff.

Can you find another diff? Yes, any V6 diff from a 88-94 pickup or 90-95 4Runner will fit in there. It should be a 4.56 on your 5-speed tranny. But a 4.88 from an automatic would also work.

Judging from your mod list, and the tire size you're probably gonna want to fit in that 3" lift, this would be an excellent time to go to a new ratio on a front & rear diff.

Yeah sorry about all the ?'s lately... I haven't had a chance to get under there since by the time I get off work it's already dark outside. I'll take a look this weekend. I was actually thinking that if I need to change the diff out, I should just go with a higher ratio. Thanks for the help ghwayduke.
