A more complicated system that makes it more convenient for the driver is not necessarily a great step forward in technology.

My two cerveza bottle caps.
No sliding collars eh? How do you think that transfer case of yours works then? Magic?

I was referring to the vacuum operated sliding collar in the axle of the ADD equipped trucks. There are no vacuum lines to worry about on my system because it's all manual.

So, does the 4WD indicator light come on when the ignition is in the on position? That is the easiest thing of all. If yes, then It's a wire or bulb... Or a fuse? What fuse in a 2000? I lost my book.

I'm having the same problem - no 4WD indicator light. None when ignition is in 'ON' either. But I'm nearly sure the 4-wheel is working - as there is a definite feel when turning on snow, especially in 4 Low, compared to 2 Low.

Another question... What it the easiest way to tell if 4WD is really in engaging?

The 4WD indicator light is in the start test when the ignition is 'ON'. The 4WD indicator came on for me twice. The second time I was able to turn off the 4-runner and put the ignition in the position, and voilą, there was the light. So, now I know the problem is not with any vacuum hoses, ADD system, etc. I am now sure the 4WD is working even when the light is off, as I had ample oportunities yesterday on snow packed roads, and I can 'feel' it. I think it's more likely a wire to the indicator light than the bulb since it's intermittent, thought this is not absolute. I've removed the dash in the past, and actually, it's not that hard for my 2000, especially when compared to other vehicles I've had. Also this is a good time to replace any other light (or remove an annoying one like my ABS light). But I'm taking it in so I think I'll just add this to the list for the mechanic (a friend of mine) to look at.

I would also suspect the sending switch on the front diff. If it does not provide connectivity when the ADD engages, you will be in 4wd yet have no light.
