Well I took out the circuit board last night and plugged it in without the faceplate on. I tested each button to see if maybe the faceplate buttons weren't making contact to the board. No luck. It's got to be a short on the circuit board somewhere is my guess. At this point I don't think it's worth my time to diagnose where the problem is because even if I found it wouldn't be worth it to try and fix the circuit board itself.

This is a very high failure part. Its almost impossible to find a used one.

Try car-part.com

Personally, i would just step up and buy the new one from Toyota and be done with it.

Day time running lights

Toyota vehicles with daytime running lights need to know light intensity for only one reason. To turn on your tail lights. Daytime running lights never go off unless you disable them. The sensor detects if there is enough light to keep your tail lights off. As it gets darker, the sensor will turn on your tail lights automatically. My 2000 Celica has DRL's and has that little 1/2 round bump near the windshield on top of the dash. When it gets dark enough outside the sensor will activate the tail lights automatically. There is a small light bulb indicator on my dash cluster that lights up, in my Celica its GREEN. All it does is tell you that the sensor is active and has detected insufficient light. I have not had to turn on my head light switch for over 6 years! I'm sure if your 4Runner has DTL's that what that sensor on your dash is for.

With all the issues I'm reading about here, glad I don't have a limited with that climate control system!

10 bux go to techinfo.toyota.com

I mean seriously pay 10 bucks get all the info. 10 bucks. for crying out loud
This is a gr8 site for downloading all the FSM's you need for ANY year and model Toyota. You have access for 24 hours for $10. download all years of 4runners if you want. I did my 98 and a 99 as well as my 2k Celica. REALLY worth the $10. Cheapest FSM you're gonna find unless you get the dealer to throw one in on a vehicle purchase.

Has anybody cured this issue by replacing the module? I bought a used one for pretty cheap, however I don't want to install the "new" module only to found out that an intermittent weak ground, or what not, caused the module to fail. Any input?

Is this part interchangeable between the years of 99-02?

Is this a common problem with all the 3rd gen limiteds, or just the 00's?

I replaced my module and everything works fine now. If you look inside your old one, you'll see the cheap plastic gears that eventually wear out and slip

If anyone else has had or does have this problem, I have hear of a fast dry electrical contact cleaner work really well... Disconect the battery for safe measure though for sure... Mine were acting rather sticky when I bought my 01 Limited and seems to be fine once "at night and with the heat on" that after about 30-45 minutes they seem to get warm and all work flawless... I am about to try this cleaner for myself... You can pick it up at Lowes, and any mainstream auto parts house.

Codes

Is there a site where can I find a list of the trouble codes? I ran the test and got codes 21 & 23.

run the diagnostic routine and see what codes come out

[if this is the automagic climate control, when you turn the key you get
diagnostic codes]

To access the diagnostic codes, hold down the auto and recirc/fresh air buttons at the same time while turning the ignition to on.

You'll see that all indicator lights and LCD elements should flash four times followed by any problem codes.

I get code 14 when it is dark out. 14 is solar sensor. when sun is out, no codes.

Bumppp Does anyone have any other ideas or have any updates? Mine's acting up now and I've taken everything apart and cleaned several times. A guy in the parts dept. at my local Toyota dealership was telling me about a company in California that "rebuilds" toyota climate control units, but couldn't remember the exact name of the place. He said it was "mikata industries" or something like that. I searched to no avail...

Update...Called all of the junk yards in my area and the last one in the phone book had access to a company that rebuilds climate control units. They are out of Texas. I had one ordered for $325 with core and when it arrives, I'll find out the name of the company. Hope this helps some of you.

Has anyone successfully repaired their own climate control?

The buttons aren't responding on my unit. Sometimes I have to hold them down or push them repeatedly to work...

I had similar problems with my 2000 limited runner. I sent it to http://stores.ebay.com/ABS-ECU-ECM-E...MPUTER-REBUILD.
It cost me $149 plus shipping. I sent it off on Monday and got it back the following Monday. I installed it and it works great. It comes with a warranty as well. I'm glad I did it.

2000 runner digital climate control rebuild

I was having similar problems with my 2000 limited digital climate control. I searched the posts and tried evrything listed I could find but no luck. I did find a link to a rebuild service on ebay. I sent them my unit on Monday. I had it back the following Monday, installed it and it works great. It even has a warranty. $149plus shipping. Well worth it to me.

Hi. New to the forum Would appreciate someone who has done this, to list out the steps on how to get to and remove the climate control module on a 2000 Toyota Limited 4Runner. Specifically, what trim and how to remove the trim to get to the module. Thanks.

Hello. New to the forum and writing this to ask for some technical help. My 2000 4Runner Limited climate control module is finally going out. Plan on buying a rebuild and replacing. However, I would appreciate someone who has already done this to explain step by step, on how to get to the module. Specifically what trim must be removed, and how to safely remove this trim without damaging. Appreciate any assistance. Thanks.

Your 4runner needs to know if it's sunny out that way when you have the headlight set to auto the lights come on when its dark. All of the sensors ambient temperature, solar, engine coolant temp and room temperature sensor inside the cabin of the vehicle all must be working properly in communicating with the integrated climate control system aka the thing inside your vehicle with the buttons for your AC, for your air conditioning system to work properly
