I've got a 3.0 litre V6 and I just had the head gaskets replaced. Cost $2600AUD, head gasket set alone was $500AUD. It included pressure and vacuum checks, new water pump, timing belt, all hoses etc, etc. What sort of money would you be looking at for the same thing over there. Mileage is 285,000 KM.

I'm not too up on Toyota parts, but the current exchange rate shows you just paid $400USD for a pair of gaskets. ....sounds like you got raped to me.
A quick search revealed a full engine gasket kit (including head gaskets) for less than $120USD.
