heyu everybody,
i have an 89 toyota pickup extra cab and i need to take the headliner out to either fiberglass or dynomat to stop some rattle....anyboyd know how to take this liner out and how big of a job it is?

I have removed the headliner in my reg cab truck for sound deadening in the past. Frankly its a pain in the butt. More for reinstallation then for the removal. You have to remove the four small round retainer clips from the back upper corners, the flexible door molding, and the "oh ˟˟˟˟˟" handles. The hard part is to next pull the headliner loose from under the back glass rubber molding. This can be tough to do without tearing it. The actual thin plastic headliner is held up and tight by thin metal rods (3 in my case) that run from side to side. You will have to bend them down until they "pop" into an inverted arch. You should be able to wiggle them out of there slots above the door frame now. This will allow the headliner to fall forward with the front still attached by a metal retainer strip, your overhead light, and sun screens. It should not be necessary to remove it all the way to apply sound deadening material.

Re-installation is just the reverse. The real hard part is getting the headliner tight enough to stuff back into and under the rear glass molding. Frankly mine looks like crap now because of this.

Sorry so long. Be careful it is easy to tear that thing.
Your truck being an extra cab might be totally different but I think it will be close.

Crancher is right, PITA. The rear of my headliner on my 86 Xtra cab never went back right after I removed to dye it grey. It also has a 3 in tear in it now. Just my .02

 

hey everybody thanks for the help so far,
crancher...i am not worried about the rear window....i work at my dads glass shop and i have taken this window out before so that is no problem to do...i was just worried about the front where it fold under the windsheild...and isn;t there insulation above the liner? and isn't that glued in? how many hours do you think it would take to take the liner out and put it back in? i need to know so i can plan around not using my truck for that long...once again thanks for the help

Hey Memphis,

If you dont have any problems with removing the back window, then I think that would really help with removal and re-installation. Along with an extra set of hands to pull and hold the headliner tight while putting the window back in. there will not be alot of extra headliner material to hold onto.

Dont worry about the front retainer strip. Its held by about six screws that run along the front. You cant get to them unless you pull the headliner down from the back anyways. AT this point you should have plenty of room to install any sound deadening to the underside of the roof without completly removing the headliner.

There is a sheet of insulation above the liner that is VERY easy to remove (no scraping or anything like that) Total time to remove and reinstall is maybe an hour. To make it look good....probably a little more. (I never took out the back window for it)
