well im going to start working on my harness for my headlights, and had a few questions before starting. ive read that our rigs are ground switched. so does that mean the bulbs are always "hot" and get turned on when a ground is applied to them? anyone care to show me which pin is which with a diagram? i dont know which of the 3 are which, and i dont have my truck now, so i cant take a dmm to it to see. also, when the high lights are turned on, the lows go off right? im going to be doing a bixenon conversion, and am wondering how people got their ballasts to stay lit while the solenoid was activated. diode spliced into the wires? thanks

Elton suggested a great website. However, have you considered changing your '97 headlamp assembly for a 99-00? I have a 00 and my buddy has a 97 and he was always jealous of the light output till he went to the junk yard and found a pair for cheap from a 2000 Runner.

well the retro is probably going to go into a tacoma since im probably going to sell the 4runner. so, how would i keep my ballasts on (low beam), and actuate the solenoids for the highs without turning the lows off? (im assuming the low and high beams dont stay on at the same time stock) would i wire one side of the harness to one healight, and the other to the other side?

 

ok so i made a mock-up harness and tested it on my impreza. right now i have the relay turning the power on to the ballasts/solenoids. should i wire it w/ pin 30 grounded and 87 out to the ground and have the solenoids/ballasts hot all the time instead? or is 30 hot, and 87 switched + okay to use? im not really good with this stuff, and i read that runing the current through the relay can wear the contacts over time, so it might be better to activate the ground

 

I intalled one of Roger's harness upgrades on my 93, they work much better now. Might check into it for the 95.5-2004

ok, so i mocked-up two harnesses on my impreza with my everlasting free time. the first pic is of a harness that would have the ballasts/solenoids grounded, and the relays would switch power on/off.

the second pic is of a harness that would have the ballasts/solenoids fused hot all thetime, and the relays would ground everything on/off.

which should i go with? do i need to do that resistor/diode deal for the high lights like i read, or will it be fine like this? thanks

 

oh, and heres an updated pic of my murano with new mounting tabs...lots of filing and drilling to get this stupid retro-unfriendly projector to hopefully work. haha. also has black internals so they look black when off

 

I guess you need to check the EWDs for your truck to see how the factory wired it. I'm a big believer in diodes and Roger's kit uses them , here's some more info on diodes (about halfway down):
