I mean have the filter cleaned and flushed, stuff like that. At what mileage have you guys done it? Is it necessary if the fluid still looks ok? How about draining it and refilling with fresh fluid yourself?

I just had mine done at 42K screen cleaned, flushed and filled with 16qts of synthetic fluid. My fluid looked fine, but I figured it was time for a change and I wanted to run synthetic fluid. The local dealer did it the whole service for $114.

I try to do most things myself, but it was a job I did not feel comfortable doing this job.

Just wondering which dealer you had your tranny service done. I'm from Richmond as well. Thanks

Might I ask why? I think that is overdoing it unless you road race your Runner. Just curious...

It is cheaper than a new $2K tranny rebuild. The owners manual says to change the engine oil at 7,500 miles. Do you follow that recommendation? I change my engine oil every 3K miles and at every fifth oil change I get the tranny flushed.

I road race every once in awhile. Lot of heat in Carolina and I have to get the 'shine to Cooter's lickety-split. But then again you are from....'Hades'???

Ok well, to each his own I guess. I change my oil every 5K miles.

"Hades" - aka "hell."

I drop my oil every 3000 and trans every 15,000. Had a complete flush @ 15,000 and @ 30,000. I drive hard and with the s/c and 100-110+ daily temps. I have a shop that uses a Wynn flush system and charges me around $80 for the full system flush and fluids. I figure it's cheap insurance and can't hurt.

Christian:

...no...you were right the first time

BTW:

The headers are really working out better and better. I think the motor took awhile to make friends with them at first. Can't wait to hit So Cal in a couple of weeks to see how the thing runs @ sea level and 30 degree cooler weather.

I got mine done at McGeorge, They have a great service department and treat you right, and the work is done on time, they even washed my rig and called me 2 days later to see if I had any problems and was happy with the service.

I would not let Haley Toyota touch my 4Runner.

Wow that is rare! I won't let any dealer touch my vehicle anymore...wastes more time arguing with them and double checking their work than if I do it myself......so I do!

To add to the thread...I drain and fill the tranny every 15K and drop the pan and clean the filter every 50-60K. You would be surprised how many metal shavings (more like metal dust) there are on the bottom of the pan when you pull it.....and I don't even have a S\C!!!

Had my tranny flushed at 30k, but I was doing some towing back & forth. Filled with synth fluid. But I have been told numerous times that constant flushes are not good. I may flush every 30k, or two years. But I don't do a lot of towing or have a s/c. That changes everything.

They are a Mercedes dealer as well so I think that is where the great customer service comes from. I am very wary of the dealership when it comes to any of my vehicles, and why I won't let the other Toyota dealer touch my car.

My wife has a 2001 BMW and those guys are fantastic. We bought the car used from Car Max (they claimed to change the oil but it was obvious it had not been done) so we took it to the BMW dealer for that and some minor problems since it is still under warranty and they said it was due for the 30K service, I asked about the price of an oil change and how much the service would cost and they said $0 it is all covered under the scheduled maintainence warranty for the first 50K miles. Go for it I said...

Now it will be expensive as hell after 50K but I tried to tell her that and she does not care. I like to work on my own car but that thing scares me I don't know where to start.

I flushed the tranny and cleaned the filter for the first time at 170K. Still works great.

I changed my oil every 5k-6k (sometimes longer if I forgot) with dino oil. Still runs fine. Now that I'm using amsoil I go 10k.

3k oil change intervals is a conspiracy by the quick lube places to get you to come in more often, IMO. Do you change your tires every 20k to avoid a blowout? A blowout at 70mph will cost more than an engine.

Bob K,

Thanks for the tip. I dealt with Haley last oil change just b/c they are on the way to work. However I live in the west end so McGeorge suites me better. I was pretty pleased with Haley, I had one of the senior technicians preform the oil change, so I guess I lucked out.
Have you had some past problems with Haley? Just curious on whether or not I should ever use them again.

Thanks,
Chris

I had an 87 p/u they worked on and worked on and worked on for a surge in the engine finally said I had to live with it. Well that was not good enough for me so I took it to McGeorge and they found it was a simple probelm in the distributor first time in. I think Haley just wanted to stick Toyota with warranty work so they never fixed it. Plus I got a loaner from McGeorge.

I guess I never forget stuff like that so I just deal with McGeorge. I live about 5 miles from Haley but work over near McGeorge.

My Brother and I did my tranny flush, drop pan, and replace filter at 60K. Took about 16qt of Mobil 1 synthetic.

Will probably do a drain and refill every 14K and another tranny change at 120K.
