Has anyone experienced this?

I need some help.

I have a 96 4runner 2wd, with ignition issues.
Sporadically, I can attempt to start the engine and one of three things might happen.
1 - Nothing. Internal lights radio all come on, but vehicle doesn't start.
2 - Half start. I'll get a engine turn, but then it'll die.
3 - Normal start.

Like I said this is sporadic. I have gotten all three in the order listed, but most of the time it'll be either scenario 1 or 2, and then on a second attempt to start, the engine will start normally.

The engine check light is not on, and when I checked for error codes everything shows ok.

I went to the dealer and they said I needed a Mass Air Flow Meter, not the sensor, the whole assembly.
But I have to admit I'm questioning. I don't know how that's tied to my initial ignition.
I haven't experienced any issues after the car has started (idling issues, driving performance, etc..).

So I'm reaching out.

Has anyone Experienced this, or can give some insight on what the issue might be?

Do a search on starter contacts, fairly common.

Sounds like a potential starter issue. If your battery cables are secure and the battery is in good condition then your starter would be a good point to check. You can get some help at your local parts supplier as well, such as Shucks, Auto zone and Napa stores. If they also suggest the starter, you get the old one out, take it to them and get it checked as well. good luck

how is the battery?
be sure the +/- connections are not corroded or loose.

check the easy (free) stuff first!
its usually that (only discovered after spending the money for the MAF)
