Harsh ride on my 4runner

On my 98 2WD SR5 I was wondering if all these 4runners ride rough or is it time to replace the struts and shocks? My 4runner rides like a truck. when you hit a bump its like you feel it in your back. any feedback on this would be great. Thanks.

4runner is built on a truck frame so you can do some replacement of suspension components to improve the ride but im not sure if you can get it to ride like a caddy.

Some more info would be great, like asked above.

Also, check your tire pressure - I was amazed at how much 2psi made.

Do the chalk test and make sure you're running the lowest pressure possible while still maintaining good tread contact.

I have about 126k miles on it, and yes it has stock suspension from what I can see. The only thing that was changed from a previous owner was the tires. They are 235/75/15

Yeah you definitely need new shocks, if the are indeed stock.

Have you done the bounce test?

Is the front suspension on these suck, in general? I like the ride comfort of 2003+ 4runner. It rides very well.

Anybody recommend a setup that has a soft suspension(front) like the 2003+ 4runner? Does the shock/spring from 2003+ fit into our generation?

Are there any bilstein comes from tacoma, 4runner, tundra that fits and work well on our 4runner?

thanks.

If you are just looking for a stock replacement, I would go do the Les Schwab special... Love those guys

Do you ever plan on lifting it down the road?

I ran stock-height Bilsteins on my 4Runner for a while and they were great.
Stiff enough for moderate off-roading yet soft enough for daily use - still stiffer than stock though so it was a tad bit bouncy.

Also be sure to search on this as it's been somewhat beat to do death.

Dont forget--3rd gen was about the last year the 4runner wasnt over "soccer-momed". So that stiff suspension is there partially for a reason.

HOWEVER--Edlebrock makes some great shocks that are smooth at first and then stiffen as terrian gets rougher. IAS is what i run in the rear and i like them.

And you might also want to think about springing light and shocking hard. it will make the ride smoother........
