Hack/Mod for 2006 Model OEM Navigation

Has any one hacked their 2006 model navigation to give you full GPS functionality while driving (instead of blacking it all out) or give you the ability to watch movies? My main reasoning here is to unlock the GPS so that it can be fully utilized while driving by the passenger. This is crazy that all of these systems (OEM and aftermarket) are this way. Please post your luck with this. I found an old thread from back in 2003, but I'm sure things have changed since then (pins, wire colors, etc.) Thanks.

most after market dvd nav systems i've messed with all you had to do was hook up a switch to short the parking brake circuit on the unit or just connect the wires together. Worked like a charm but on OEM I'm not sure

I found this website today while doing some searching on this issue...

http://www.coastaletech.com/

The folks at VAIS Tech mentioned them as well. After scouring the internet, it looks like this is a VERY popular mod to help unlock the functions of your nav unit. I found it late and they are on the east coast, so I think they are gone for the day. Anyway, I'm going to do some digging into this and see what I can find out.

Big question...I do not have a DVD entertainment system per say...however I do have dual LCD monitors in each headrest, each with their own dvd player inside. So if I had to answer if I have the DVD entertainment system, then I guess the answer would be no. The million dollar question....

If I do all of these mods...will the in dash DVD slot that normally holds the navigation DVD play DVD movies...once it's hacked and unlocked?

No.

You can put a switch on the SPEED wire, when you want to change the NAV settings just hit the switch for a minute, when done turn the switch off. I have the OEM NAV too, that one thing pisses me off to no end, but I can't be bothered with modding it since I never drive my 4Runner anyways.

Do you already have this navigation unit? I was extremely interested in getting a Panasonic A3 (~$1000 installed), but my father was just in town and had a Garmin Nuvi portable unit. I was really impressed by this little thing. The directions were all right on and very user friendly. He had the very basic model, so no MP3 or anything, but you can get ones with a big hard drive and extra features for much less than a new in-dash unit. Another plus is that you can use this in a rental car if you travel somewhere.

I think I am going to go with a portable route. Sorry that this is on a bit of a tangent.

The portable units are nice, and they're loaded with more features than most OEM NAV units. But you can beat the look of an OEM NAV unit.

Yes...we've already got it. I've just got to find a definitive hack to get around the blackout of the GPS functions while driving. I mean you can't change your destination, look at points of interest...nothing! Ridiculous! The aftermarket units are the same way.

That's odd, the GPS in my 06 GTI allows full functionality while driving.

You think it's the same connectors for an '06 vs. an '03? I can't see Toyota changing it that much. I've got to get in touch with Coastaletech.com on Monday or Tuesday to find out about their Lockpick. It's very robust for the Lexus vehicles, but doesn't look to be as robust (yet...may be in development) for the Toyota vehicles. I'm gonna see what they tell me. Their products would most definitely be the easiest if they have an application that does what I want.
