I have a Garmin GPS V. It has a good vechile mount that comes with. The maps are pretty pricey, I got the US Topo 100k, which is OK.

It works really well in terms of quick Sat aquiring, shows the maps pretty well, and does a very good job of tracking (showing were you have been) works well on Topo map as well. Screen resolution is very good, a bit small the screen but OK. Works in truck and as handheld.

It's got multiple types of screens which is very handy, also can do routing and autorouting which is a bit slow sometimes.

What I dont like is no extra mem only 19MB or so which limits maps that you can load. You can't add card as with some of the new GPS's. Only serial interface, so uploads are slow.

Hope this helps you. I would recommend carefully looking at the features you want before buying. Or start with a 2nd hand unit till you know what you need.

I have the eMap and it works good enough for the intended usage. Got it off ebay with 8k, 32k, 128k memory modules, and a ton of extra's...for around $200 a while back.

Be advised that it's not secure... The Army sent out a notice to discontinue their use in A-Stan.
