What would you pay for a running 22r or 22re? I've found an re that the kid said he wants $400 for. He said he also has an r for $200. Both are complete from manifolds to oil pan.

 

what kind of engine do you need? are the motors for sale late style or early style?

if they're both late style engines and you have a late style motor already, just buy his 22R. if you have a 22RE you can swap your manifolds onto it

 

I've got an 81 pickup. The re is out of a 94 but I've pretty much decided to stay w/ the carb for simplification. Aren't all the 22r's the same? I thought it was the re's that had a slightly taller deck height.

 

there's two kinds of 22R(E) motors. early and late style. the early style have a shorter deck/taller head('81-84). these had a dual timing chain and steel rockers from '81-82, and a single row timing chain and aluminum rockers from '83-84. these motors have a "volcano dome" piston that goes up into the head. the '83-84 model can be converted to a 22RE as it has all the correct holes on the head for the RE intake manifold, since celicas were available with fuel injection in 1983 and 1984 with the early style motor.

the late style or "lazer" block came out in late 1984-85. it has a taller block and shorter head, with flat top pistons. the compression is also higher than the early motor at 9.5:1(early is 9:1). most 22REs are are this style of motor. the easy way to spot one is to look for a "flying saucer" shape on the driver's side of the block, and the head has pear shaped exhaust ports while a 20R or early 22R has round exhaust ports.

for simplicity and cheapness' sake, try and find a late motor if you can. the parts are much, much cheaper and easier to find. a timing cover runs about $50, whereas finding one for an early motor like the one i'm building is closer to $100, and head bolts are only available from the dealer to my knowledge, while you can regularly find them for $20 a set aftermarket for the late motor. saves a lot of headaches!

 

a late style motor will physically interchange w/ the old one, right? meaning the motor mounts are in the same spot, input shaft will still work w/ the crank ect. Basically as long as it's a 22r and not an re it should bolt in and work? But a late style block would be to an advantage $$ wise. Does $200 sound decent?

 

$200 is a good deal. i paid $175 for an early motor carb to pan, though i'm rebuilding it in the end(had no compression).

the late motor should interchange with the early one with no problems. do you already have an intake manifold? if so, any late model 22R or 22RE will fit, just swap your intakes
