im gonna paint it the same color, i got my guy who does all my cars, he told me he would paint it with two coats. is that enough?

Is he talking about acrylic enamel which is in theory a 1 stage "after priming" or a base coat clear coat? If he shoots down a good color coat and hits it with 2 coats of clear that would be fine, if it’s an acrylic enamel job 2 coats would be OK as long as there are no light spots or runs that need fixed. Find out what type of job you are getting done and how many coats per stage!

 

i just painted my truck. put on two coats then one coat clear. turned out pretty good. only had it like this for about a month, so i'll have to see how well it holds up after a while.

 

yea he has to sand it down put the primer and then two coats and the one clear coat i think.

 

I really wanna get mine done too cause I've got chips and scratches all over but I'm not sure there's any point because of how far my tires stick out the side...its so expensive to get it done and it would probably get ruined after a month or two.

I want to paint mine snow camo... I think I got the idea because its all the colors my truck is now... white, silver and black. I think it would look cool. But, thats down the line when I don't have anything useful to pay for. Like OBA/Lockers and a SAS. Then some new paint will be in order.

 

I work in autobody and do alot of painting. If you're talking base/clear, the standard is two coats of clear. I don't know of any paint manufacturer who recommends only one. The two are recommended to provide UV protection for the color. It's also beneficial because you can do much more buffing over the years without fear of buff-through. If you're talking single stage, two is also the norm, and is quite sufficient.

 

That sounds cool, I'd like to do something similar some day, but I like woodland camo personally. If you ever did go snow camo, would you go glossy, or more utilitarian and a matte finish? As you can tell, I have no auto painting experience, I'm just dreaming

cool man, great to hear it from someone who actually does auto body. it should be ok then.

 

Not to hijack too much more but what does an average paint job usually cost, none of that Maaco crap...but a good overall paintjob using pretty high quality paint and enough clear coat to adequately protect the paint?

if the truck is going to be used offroad, get scratched etc

i would go with a single stage urethane, it is cheaper and if laid out nice will look real good, especially with good prep

 

In general,,,,a Maaco paintjob can be suprisingly good, it is not the 1970s when their paint jobs were crap with the paint and technologies that are available today, a good paint job can be had though them

especially if the vehicle was prepped right, why not go to a maaco and look over a hand full of cars that were just painted there, get some ideas on how much you want to spend, maybe you dont want their 300 dollar special or whatever they have going so you opt on spending 800 or something

if you research you can do well, important to keep an idea on what the truck will be used for

most Maacos paint way way more cars than a local small shop, the painters have experience, if they take pride in their work and the car is prepped right,,will come out good,,,, it is like pizza even massed produced pizza such as Dominos,,or Papa Ginos is still decent
