the cluster, turn signals, keyring hole, and a/c panel (not pictured) are led bulbs.
i couldnt find good colored bulbs to use and did not want (also too lazy to) drill and solder in leds. Not as good as wild_bill's blue interior where he wired up several led's but the led bulbs still look great.

I've been wating to replace all my bulbs behind my dash too... What kind of bulbs does it take other than 194s? I had part of it apart and one was a really small wedge bulb... :pat:

74's are the small ones

I was going to do Wild_Bills version but that's alot of work and time consuming. I would end up driving around with an open dash for weeks.

I 100% agree. Does any 3rd Gen owner have a list of what bulbs it would take to replace all of the stock green lights with new ones (whatever color they may be)? And if so, could you give a quick rundown of what the procedure entailed?

Many thanks to anybody who does this.

Here's a source: http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm
Pick any bulb and click the Buy It link for a list of all the bulbs, they have most anything imaginable!

Do you really need a writeup on how to change light bulbs?...

Okay from when I had the dash apart when I did the replacement of face gauges there are 3 green condoms on white 194 bulbs, I think that was the number but not 100% sure its been over a year ago (these backlight the gauges and also the needles) I think and the rest were the smaller ones (possible 74) but I don't recall what size.
Look at this pic when I removed the green condoms..

I may end up re-doing them with some Blue LED's (got a pack from Ebay for my boost gauge, I did last weekend). If I do I will take mooe pics of the back, but you can get a close idea of how many you would have to replace by counting the number of twisty things on the back of the PIC I posted.

Well hope this helps someone, I know I prefer to know what I am getting into before opening things up. Will also probably do my Climate control in Blue LED's if I pull the dash apart this weekend

Changing gauge lights are easy. I've tried to do the LEDswap and bought lights from superbrightleds.com-failed, LEDs(even inverted ones) dont produce even light pattern to light up the dash, LEDs project lights mostly forward not to the side, mine looked like crap, so I gave up. I'm really interested in pics.

they make them with different shape outputs. you probably got the spot kind, you needed to get the one that spreads the light out.

Looking through this thread iv'e seen the clusters from a first gen and third gen. Do the second gen clusters use the same bulbs and 'condoms'? I'm thinking blue might revive my dash.

If you wanna do it the real cheapo way(like me) you can just pull out the bulbs and paint them the color you want. I used bad paint, but if you can find a paint the opacity (spelling) then you should be able to get good results. I could post up some pics of mine, but its kinda hard to tell. Also change the bulbs is a peice of cake. Especially after you take it apart so many times you loose all the clips!

simply pulling and painting or replacing with colored bulbs doesn't work well, the light is very dim. I found that out by trying both those methods and ended up going back to stock so I could see the gauges at night. LEDs are brighter. as for the condoms, the blue condoms are going to block more light from the bulb than the green ones so they will also be dimmer.

I too would be interested about the center dash, I have taken the heater controls several times, once because I had to change out the bulb and as far as the heater controls go those LED's have the same kind of condoms that the 3rd genners are talking about. I have never taken my gauge cluster out, that just scares me, so I don't know about that, if they do that is definitely what I want to do. White faced gauges are hard enough to find for 2nd genners...plus I think the blue light against the black gauges would look pretty good.

So can anybody help us 2nd genners out...do our gauges have the condoms on them too??

Thanks!

Fink

those aren't led's in the heater control panel, they're regular bulbs. also, the led's are brighter so the use of the condoms on those doesn't dim them light they do the oem bulbs.

By the way, I have the 84-89 glove box locks from that same write up page on ebay, if anybody wants a stocking stuffer. Only 7 blue and 11 brown left.
