Fuel Problem

Last week while in the Sedona my 4runner spuddered and died along the first trail that I hit (basically a dirt road) and when I started it back up I had a weird fuel smell (kind of smelled like a oil and gas mix, more of a gas smell though). That smell lasted thoughout the day, while at low idle/speed and on start up.
The following day the smell was non present and hasn't been for the past week. Until, yesterday - the smell returned on my way home from work and around town.

I'm not really sure to go with this. I had replaced the fuel filter two week prior to my trip and there has been no signs of fuel leaking from it. I not sure if I have a loose line somewhere (don't know what to even check) or if it's a problem with the fuel injectors or something else.

Gas mileage range has dropped as well (about half a tank right know with only 100 miles on the clock and the fill up the other day was at 150-170 miles with about a quarter tank left). I go the speed limit and no jack rabbit starts off the line.

Any help or advice you all could give would be great.

i know you dont have the 3vze (or do you?? hmm) .. but i had a the same problem with my 3.0 ..it was a leaking fuel pulsation dampner on the passenger side fuel rail by the injectors.. it was leaking all over my hot exhaust manifold.. one spark and i would've been toast.

there have been a lot of cases with the fuel pulsation dampner on the 3vze leaking. sometimes it even starts a fire. buy a fire extinguisher and drive with it in your lap, and get it fixed IMMEDIATELY!!!

i realized that you probably had the 3.4... what i was saying is that they are VERY similiar engines, and you could potentially have the same problem.. the point being that they both have efi (which uses fuel rails, fuel injectors, and fuel pulsation dampners) ..so you may be having the same problem.. i just dont want your truck to explode into flames. if you can smell gasoline, you have a very big problem.. so i will repeat.. get it checked out IMMEDIATELY!!

With EFI you should never smell fuel. EFI works with high pressures so fuel leaks can be especially dangerous. Follow the smell & find the leak ASAP ( don't forget a good Extinguisher!!)

It's into the stealership right now. The fuel system checked out fine no problems.

Did find out that I had two to three spark plugs that were servey fouled due to a oil leak and the valve covers were leaking.
