I read somewhere that there are copper gaskets that should be replaced when changing a fuel filter. Does anyone know if these typically come with the filter, or do they need ot be purchased separately?

Some brands of filters will give you the copper gaskets. Cheaper brands don't. I have reused them in a pinch, but it is best to replace them. Most auto parts stores stock the coppers separatly, too.

I don't believe there are any gaskets on a 98 4Runner fuel filter.

Do change it when the fuel tank is low, I had a problem with gas running out of the line to the tank. Do oil the threads a bit when reassembling. The fuel pump connector is under the rear seat on the drivers side if you want to disconnect and run the engine to reduce pressure in the lines. Rotate up the seat bottom and look under the carpet. Use fitting wrenches so you don't round the hex on the fuel line fittings, they are on tight. Have a pan handy to catch all the gas, there will be quite a bit. I did mine outside.

Actually the only info I'm going on is what I've found so far in the archives and through replies - haven't tried a fuel filter change yet! So thanks to you and everyone else for the tips, I'm sure knowing about your experiences will help.

Looks like its better to use a flare nut wrench on the fittings. Anyone happen to know what size wrench is correct?
