Got one compression fitting (nut) loose but the other one began to strip. quit while I was ahead. Any suggestions on what to do now? How can I replace the nut?

 

How about vice grips?

 

I'm sure theres a way to do it, but when that happened to me, I had to take it in, and they had to replace some of the fuel lines, supposedly its a common thing. Since its my dd, i didnt have time to putter around and figure out a way,

 

Were you using a flare nut wrench? You might need some vice grips or channel locks.

 

It is a basic nut. Just on very tight. I guess I can try vice grips but doubt it, tight space in there. This is also my daily driver so I can't risk breaking a line. I'm afraid what the stealership would do to me. Here is a photo, vever mind the red cap, that is tabasco sauce being used as liquid wrench. Not my photo though.

That is not what I would call a basic nut....There are two "nuts" the one on the line which is a "flare nut" which will rotate around the line that it is on. The other one on the filter does not move. To rotate that one the entire filter would have to rotate. If you use vice grips be carful how tight to try to make them, you can bend both of those "nuts" making them out of round. I use liquid wrench alot on all the seems. disconnect the the filter put a line wrench on the flare nut and a pipe wrench on the filter.

 

You may can still use a flare nut wrench if it's not rounded off. It isnt a regular nut, anytime you work on soft metals like that then its a good idea to use a flare nut wrench since it has a more solid grip on it. I hate to tell you but if you cannot get it off then you may have to cut the line and put a new flare nut, then reflare the end. Be careful not to cause a spark though.

 

Yeah, I used a lot of liquid wrench. And was trying to loosen the flare nut (didn't know that was a flare nut though). I'll look into a flare nut wrench otherwise to the stealership I go.

 

Don't get too discouraged citykid, it takes breaking stuff to learn more about your mistakes than just getting lucky and not learning a thing. A flare nut wrench would be a good investment for the next time you need it. Good luck!
