Front Clamshell Differentials - Are these compatible?
I posted this up on TacomaWorld but wanted to cast a larger net. I'm attempting to regear '04 Tacoma with ADD to 4.56. I picked up a "new" 4.56 Clamshell differential from ebay that came from another truck. Got the original diff out and was starting to swap mounts over, tubes, etc. However, looking at both diffs side by side, there are a few differences. Can anyone tell me if these are compatible with each other. The original diff has holes all along the ADD side output (see arrows for example) and some different porting inside. The other diff I have has an extra plug and does not have the holes on the output side. See photo:
Does anyone know if these are interchangeable with each other. Why the difference between the two (ADD vs non-ADD perhaps)? I was under the impression that all the front IFS clamshell differentials were the same between all 1st gens, just the ADDs got the extra actuator on the extension tubes. Thanks for the help!
Thats the inner stub for the intermediate shaft ADD side and some sort of oil slinger/regulator, the other diff is missing the stub. Not sure about the extra bolt, your main concern is gear ratio and mounting match.
The bolt at the bottom best I can figure out is just a plug for differential temp sensor? I think all you're missing is the gear you pointed out in the original one. Otherwise I haven't been able to research any differences.
I did a manual hub swap on my 98 Tacoma and ADD and non ADD is no different its just the Cvs 28 spline outer with a 31 inner and the hubs that are different
