flywheel broken-what to do? transmission replacement
1996 4runner lts, v6 4wd, 280k miles
80k miles ago changed to full syn in tranny
No issues up to this point, level fine, fluid a little dirty but ok.
Last wednesday coming home, at 45mph, let off gas in curve, give it some on the straight away and all of a sudden, like in neutral. no drive/accel.
Figured tranny/tq gone. Got a 80k mile 99 4runner tranny for $400. Good shape, not much grey wear material in it.
I pull my tranny, and find the flex/flywheel broken. Broke at the circle above the engine mount bolts (star shaped break).
My tranny shows some material (ie grey) no shavings. TQ drained, no bits, material at all.
So, is it possible my tranny/t-q broke the flywheel?
I must say it looks fatigued, not single instance broken. I can see some rust in areas that were cracked.
So, which tranny do I put back. The 99 tranny, which "should" be good, or my old tranny and t-q?
Couple tips:
Remove the grease zerk when pulling the drive shafts, makes them compress oh so much easier.
Flush the oil coolers, if cahnce of debris in them.
Cheers

I have seen several broken flex plates on chrysler minivans before. They break in a circle around the bolts and the plate shifts just enough to mess up the crank sensor reading, causing the engine to bog down. Definitely replace the flexplate and put in the other trans & see what happens.

Well, got the plate swapped out. Move the transfer case to the other tranmission, swapped out the rear eng oil seal and some seals on the trans/transfer case.
Just did not get it all installed yet to try.
Fingers crossed it will all be good.
Thanks for the help.
I never heard of a 4runner plate breaking, kinda weird.
