Looking for some advice... I think I may buy a set of FJ80 wheels that appear to be in good condition, but has alittle brake dust in the holes and are a bit dirty with some loss of shine. Some very minor clearcoat blemishes too.

What does everyone recommend to get these wheels back to par ?

Looking for types of cleaners/polishes and methods besides elbow grease to get the shine back.

methods that dont include health amounts of elbow grease include getting out your checkbook for new wheels, or geting out your checkbook for a wheel shop to detail them for you.

if neither the above to intrest you, some elbo greese, a drill or die grinder or (really long time) dremil and some AL polish youll have them looking good again in... (well not no time) well some time.

 

looks to me like the brake dust is way behind the surface and the "holes" are painted. this means that they are 1997 FZJ80 40th Anniversary Edition wheels. they look decent. you can strip them and re-clear them, or you can just use some scratch-out on them and be happy that you have them.

 

Where do you get the "scratch-out" stuff... and how is it applied?

Do they make an attachment for a drill that is a polisher? if so, which one do you recommend? What have you found to be the best in removing brake dust (It looks like it might be baked on there??? )

I think I am going to attempt to get them to shine on my own, if they look horrible, then I will opt to take them somewhere to be done professionally.

those wheels dont look bad at all. Get them, polish them up, and if it still looks like that, get them finished somewhere else...or maybe even PC.

I saw my wheels and wasnt sure on the condition(pictures dont do real justice). If they were bad, i was just gonna PC them and be happy!

 

Sorry for so many questions... but does anyone have past experience with getting a shop to detail them or refinish the wheels --- How much (Ballpark) can I expect to pay?

 

I hear its around 120/wheel to finsih it(make it look like new)

are you going to wheel this thing or enter it in beauty pageants?

buy the wheels. wash them w/ some dawn and then use them. don't polish them, take off the brake dust, or anything else. they're going to get dirty and scratched if you wheel your runner.

if you don't wheel your runner, then you'll want a different set of wheels....

 

Dont worry, I kinda felt the same way when i was getting my wheels.

just get them and see what kind of condition they are in.

How much are you getting the 4 for?

 

200.00 bones for 4. Maybe with the center caps (but the caps sound wore out/faded)

I do start planning on wheeling more this year... I am the original owner of my 99 4R, and have taken care of it throughout my ownership. I do refuse to go muddin' as I have beat an Isuzu to death back in the day... But I will still venture out but , I want a nice lookin ride for my beauty pageants

This is the first time I bought used wheels and never really had to buff out wheels before since I always took care of them. So, just looking into some advice.

Make sure they are all straight. Dont worry what the look like, as long as they arent all pitted and peeing.

If you need centercaps, i have a set of 4 I would like to sell.

Can you explain further? Do all of the years have this "black ring" on them? Are you saying my current nuts on my Limited wheels will not work with these wheels?

Oh...I forgot the guy I am buying the wheels from said they are from a 1995 LandCruiser.

not sure what years have the black ring around the holes.

I have the black ring and the stock lugs did not work. you have to get a more narrow 19mm? lugnut

Unfortunately no... or I would have considered getting a second set too to sell. I did see 1 wheel on ebay from a guy in Hyattsville in good shape. But he only had one available...

It took me about 3-4 weeks to locate a set... I looked all over, emails, etc. I did find a full set in Pittsburgh but they were in horrible shape. They would have required full stripping and reconditioning.
