FJ60/62 or 4Runner .....

hey I'm thinking of getting some sort of wheeling special for around $2000---something that a Mexican mechanic can fix with ease--I drove a 1st gen 4Runner 88 auto last weekend in the jungle with a 4cyl and loved it--it had 35's.... I would also consider a FJ60/62.....Just something I can wheel the hell out of with minimal problems----I don't think I could get an FJ40 this cheap---any suggestions?

I was going to get a FJ80 but was convinced about having too many electrical problems in the future....Toyota parts are hard to come by down here. I am selling my current 4Runner becuase I can't justify wheeling such a nice car---and it attracts too much attention down here......
Although if it doesn't sell I will have to say too hell with it and have a good time wheeling

if you're gonna get the 4runner, look for 5 spd.
the fj60/62 engine is not exactly economical. My brother has one. I think he's getting 13 mpg.
Having said that, I would get the Fj60 because it's already a solid axle and it's made for environment like yours.

I have my doubts whether a Mexican mechanic could tackle anything with a 3.0 and IFS. If you go with the 4Runner, go with a 1st gen 22RE with a solid axle and buy some spare Birfs for when they do explode. But my choice would be the FJ60 or even better a 40 or 45. By the way, I think Belize imports Toys so you could get parts there or stateside.
