First problem with 4runner Please Help

Today I was merging onto the freeway and when I floored it I had very little accereration. It seeded like my auto tranny would not down shift. I tried to floor it a couple more times and it was stuck in overdrive. When I turned overdrive off it would go into 3rd but still wouldn't downshift to 2nd. After I got off the freeway and came to a stop, when I accelerated it seemed that it was stuck in 3rd or 4th. It started to go slowly and then I let go the gas and stepped on it again it went into 1st.

It seems to work fine again but now my check engine light came on? I haven't gotten it read yet. I did check to see that all my fluids levels are full and they were.

Its a 99 4runner SR5 3.4L 2wd. Please help.

The downshift cable may be sticking inside the cable shroud. Uncommon but happened to me. Usually creates high upshifts. Go to a transmission shop and get cable checked plus codes and what they imply. Its amazing what a fresh fluid change and new filter will solve. Computer controlling transmission may be the culprit as well.

your TPS (throttle positioning sensor) is out of adjustment.. you need to readjust it and see if that fixes it, or by a new one and adjust that. open up your owners manual and learn how to check the check engine light code.. it will tell you for sure that the problem is the TPS.

I don't have a owners manual but I'll check out the TPS and the cable. Thanks for the tips.
