Starting all over from scratch with this 2000 4Runner. Completed my first modification today--I picked up some Yakima Railriders for $20, threw on my old 48" bars, bike carriers & Yakima TLC kayak saddles. Gotta love the versatility of Yakima stuff as these accessories have been on my four previous vehicles.







I need to replace my old-school bike carrier with one that will lock to the rack and is compatible with disc brake equipped mountain bikes; the Yakima Viper is probably the ticket.

 

Is that a one seater kayak or a two seater?

 

It's a one-seater Necky Looksha Sport. It's 14.5' in length and has just enough room in the front and rear compartments to store my camping gear for overnight trips.

Anyone else using these railrider mounts? I see Yakima replaced them with their "control tower" series.

Railriders are decent. Control towers make removing the rack much easier not that you would have much of an issue with RR. Can't beat $20. Being the anal rack person that I am I was going to chew you out for not using bow and stern tie downs, but then I noticed the lack of straps entirely. Roofs are meant for accessorising.

 

I threw the kayak on the roof (without straps) just to adjust the TLC saddles. I never used bow or stern straps on my last vehicle but it is probably a very good idea.

For anyone else using railriders, did you simply use the long torx bolts with the OEM Toyota threaded wedges (the sliding part inside the rails)?

 

Out of everything out there, suprisingly enough those metal plates are standard. You'll have no problem using them instead of specific Yakima plates (or Wedges).
