Firecracker Smell and New Shocks

Firecracker Smell and New Shocks
Hey guys. I have two questions which are causing me much grief. I have a 94 runner 3VZE 4wd.
1) I want to put new shocks in the rear of the truck, and Im not interested in replacing the stock coils right now. I was told to buy some "overload" shocks (educate me on the actual name) which are essentially shocks with a spring support attached, which could help the stock coils. But from what it looks like, I dont think I could fit these "overload" shocks in the rear because the distance between the shocks and the lateral control rod are very close (the coils are very close too). Has anyone had any luck installing these type of shocks, and if so, what kind?
2) I havent been able to identify this problem for some time. When Im accelerating rapidly, Im getting a "burnt firework" smell. It seems like its coming from the engine when I have my window open. Possible exhaust leak? It smelled like that ever since I bought the truck but it seems to be getting worse as Im now heading into 160k on the engine. Ive pulled the plugs, and they are rather yellowish-white (heat problems?).
I appreciate any replies! Thanks!

try switching gasoline brands or use a fuel system cleaner at the next fill up.
it may also be time to change the charcoal canister or one of the hoses that attach to it is loose.
