FINALLY! new gears and rear locker!

After a weekend at Tellico and Beasly knob I know I like the front locker but the 29 point turns get some getting used to when to lazy to get out and unlock hubs. I love the tru-trac she didn't let me down once! Very solid feel in the front and rear, not to mention made some climbs at Beasly look easy. Yeah! lockers rock.

Fuel economy was btwn 17-18mpg with flats, hills, mountains, and offroad. If I keep it under 2400rpms here in fl she doesnt even shift going over overpasses where as before she would freak out and go to 3500rpm's. The best way I can describe the 4.56's is like it never goes into OD but just a lil above the OD rpm's I thought at first this would kill the mpg but soon realized with the power curve restored the fuel economy was better.

Oh and at what speeds were you cruising at on the freeway? With that said, did it feel easier to pass someone (while at 70+ miles per hour) than before the regear?
If you had to do it all over again (the regear that is), would you do 4.56s again or up them to 4.88s instead?
Reason I ask is, my biggest concern is maintaining speed while on the freeway, yet not compromsing mpgs.

Ok, I'm confused...so are you saying, you were using OD, but it just felt like you were in 4th? Or are you saying you stay in 4th gear all the time?
No no it goes to the top gear but the rpm's are up.

70-85mph and hell yes it was easier to pass at 70. It will do 95 no problem.

Well it will never get 21 mpg again but 17-18mpg isn't bad considering I was getting 16-17mpg prior to gears. I got the power and acceleration back.

I was curious, would the numbers be the same for a 1st gen 4 Runner with a V6 3.0L and an automatic as for you guys with the bigger 3.4L V6? Any regearing testimonials for the older 4Runners? I got an 88 3L and wanted to go 33's. Forgot what my stock ratio is, but I remember G292.

Oh the poor 3.0. I had a 95 pickup as in pre-tacoma. The previous owner had installed either 4.27 or 4.30's F&R. Now I never drove it w/o the gearing and with 33's she had a hard time maintaining 70-75 w/0 being at or above 3000rpm.

Yes, the poor 3.0L. Will anything help as far as gears go? Or should I scrap it and implant a Toy 3.4L or go for a Chevy 4.3L? I'm thinking I should have bought an 84 to make it easier to swap engines. I did not expect great performance when I bought it, but it's incredible how it's not any better than a 22R, as in won't hold 65 without downshifting out of O.D.

It's ok I loved mine and regret ever selling it. I knew it was slower than most but still faster than a Land Rover Series. I think gear will help just not as much as you want. You mentioned a motor, were you planning on doing a motor anyway?

I owned an '86 4Runner 4cyl 5spd and upgraded the stock 4.10s to 4.88s. I ran 33s for a while and then upped them to 35s. The gears did great w/ 33s (low gearing on the trails) and they did okay w/ the 35s. (the truck felt more like stock power then.)

I have an email into them for a new pin and spring I hope hope hope and pray pray pray that is all it is. That way it will be easy to swap, drop the case split the diff, replace pin , re gasket the diff, re-install. As for the leaky oil seal It might or might not be related. But it is the driver side seal, so wise man say it is to coincidental to be unrelated.

is that for your front locker? and little stuff like that is why i jus twent ahead and paid the big bucks to get the warranty... i hate working on diffs, too confusing and time consuming!
hopefully its an easy fix though, now that im locked i cant imagine trying to wheel without one, as soon as i get that new tacoma im going to lock up the front diff and throw some sliders on her. cant wait!!!
