Lightbulb Figured out dome light, write up complete!

I finally figured out how to get the front maplights to come on with the middle dome light on my 3rd gen 4runner. I have already posted on another thread, but nobody seemed to realize it, hahaha. Well anyways, I thought this would be a useful mod for other people too. You could even add footwell lights too, and get a really bright interior at night. I was thinking of making a write up how to do this, can anyone tell me how to post a tech write up?Thanks

If you go here you'll see the rules for submission of a tech write-up that you then mail to corey@yotatech.com. I'd like to see it once you're done. I've been thinking about installing lights under the seats or possibly in the door panels for a while but have never been motivated enough to really look into it.

thanks, ill submit the write up soon. Yea making the front maplights come on when the door opens makes a huge difference. The inside of the 4runner is so dimly lit at night. This is a really useful mod, everyone that gets in my truck immediately notices its brighter than before.

That's cool. That's exactly how I feel. I look forward to seeing it.

Great idea for a write-up. Make the write-up easy for electrical dummies like me if possible!

i agree!

also, if you really have trouble with the writeup, do it in word and send it over to me via email... with pics attached.

i can HTML-ize it for submission to make it easier.

A couple of folks here have footwell lighting... It really does help. This is my interior:

(click pic for babble, but not really a write-up)

Here is the link to the other thread, I deleted the posts I made there so there wasn't the same thing two different places. https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/crazy-dome-light-problem-need-help-7672/

I will try to make the write up as basic as I can, although no matter how you do it, it requires soldering, not too difficult though. I will go into more detail in the write up, but the basic idea is converting the front maplights to switched ground like the middle dome light is. I still plan on doing the footwell lights, but on a dimmer, and separate switch (door, off, on). Ill try to take pictures of what I have done already, I didn't take pictures as I was going . Hey if anyone wants me to do it to their 2000 4runner, I could take pictures of the process on that one. Ill try to get the write up done Thursday. no school!!

I think we are allowed to send it in text format, right? I read the page on write ups, isn't that what it said? HTML would probably look better though. Ill keep your offer in mind. Thanks!

I have 2 spare lights in my garage waiting for installation... a write up would definitely streamline the process!

Those would be great for the footwell lights, but with my method, you dont need extra lights, you are just wiring the front two maplights so they are controlled by the middle dome light, and the two black switches up front.

the maplights are still controlled like they used to be, now you can control them with the middle dome light switch too.

Almost done, right now working on getting reasonable pictures, and shortening the wordiness of it, lol. I tried to make it as detailed as possible since I don't have pictures of the process, just pictures of everything done. And of course I'm double checking everything to make sure its exactly how I did it, no typos that could screw something up!

I did the footwells as well, front and rear.

Also, while at that, I did some other needed spots for lighting. They also dim with the other dash lighting via the factory dimmer knob.
