Factory Paint Question

Does the Desert Dune color have a clear coat on it? The reason I ask, is I'm ordering some Zaino products and the wax is clear-coat specific. 1 wax is for non-clear coat paint and 1 wax is for clearcoats. Does anyone know for certain? Thanks

I'm almost positive it does. I think the only colors, from Toyota atleast, that don't have a clear coat are white and black. I may be wrong Maybe someone will help me out here.

My 1997 4Runner, which is desert dune, has clear coat. It peeled off the mirror on the driver's side.

I got some duplicolor clear coat and sprayed it.

Is that true that black has no clearcoat???! I am getting ready to rework the paint on my rig and it would be helpful to know the answer so I don't use the wrong cut on the surface.

I have a 2000 Black Limited and its definately cleared. I do autobody and I haven't seen a 4runner after 96 that isn't cleared. Best way to check is to take a very gentle rubbing compound, I like Meguiar's paint cleaner(step 1 for non pro's) . Put it on a rag and give it a few semi-gentle rubs, if there is color on your rag you have no clear coat. Hope that helps.

i'm almost positive that my 02 sport has only a single-stage, noncleared coat...my .02, but that's what i've read and found out after a year of detailing.

Clear Coat

I think I remember reading somewhere on the forum here that for 4Runners - black, white and red have NO clearcoat.

My Tacoma didn't have any clear on it from factory. But it does now and with that ppg black it looks LOTS better.

Stopped by a detailer and he told me that it had a single stage clear coat. Not the authority but it is a professional opinion

TOR

Somebody ask TOR. He should be able to find out for sure about the clear coat controversy!

Usually it will say it or include it as an "option" on the window sticker. Anyone still have theirs? They might check on there.

One reason Im almost positive mine didn't have any clear coat on it is....when I got the truck on the upper part of the door below the glass (u know where u put your arm when the windows down) The paint was all ruff and some of it was just plain wore off. It was this way on both sides. A clear coat finish would never do this. Im pretty familiar with paint quality and gloss and I could never get that paint to shine like a clear coat vehicle. Just my $.02
