Factory lockers

Im going junk yard shopping in the coming weeks and one of the things i would like to find is a locker.I have a few questions about them. 1) will 3gen lockers fit a 2gen runner? 2)what clues am i look for when under the rig for a locker? or any other info i may need.

Yes an E-locker will go into your axle housing but you have to modify the housing a little.

Here's what they look like.

This article explanes it. If you have a V6 you may not have to drill and tap the holes, i'm not sure.

You can tell if a junkyard donor has a factory locker without getting under there. It will have a rectangle button that says "RR DIFF LOCK" to the left of the steering wheel on the dash if it came from the factory with one. Several readers have done this mod to older Toys.

I found mine on CarPart.com For $300 including shipping from Tennessee. Finding one locally would be improbable so look on the 'net a little. Its important to know what ratio the gears are, they came in 4.10; 4.30; and 4.56. You have to match your front ratio of course.

Is there any way in the world that one of the factory lockers would work on a 2WD Runner. I know they make 2WD lockers, and I would love one, but I would really like to have one of the Toyota ones. If not do you guys know anywhere that sells some2WD lockers cheep, or at least a fair price?

They will go into any Toyota 8" ring gear diff. I'm not sure if that's what is in a 2wd Taco . The 95 and older 2wd Mini Trucks have a 7.5 inch diff. If your 96 2wd has 6 lug nuts per wheel I bet you have an 8 inch. Toyota sold 2wd Tacoma 'Prerunners' that have the e-locker. Its probably the same drill to put it into your 2wd.

Oh so you think if I found a wrecked PreRunner that I could match up the locker that way? I would really love to have one, that would give me such more traction. I would really be able to push the 2WD limits even more. Thanks.
