im going to to the diff breather mod today. ive read writeups on it. do i really need to get the new diff breather from toyota? i cant just take the cap of the existing one?

Yes, you need to get a new part. I didnt use a Toyota part, I actually used a Nissan part (maybe that's what you meant).

You cant take the cap off the stock breather without ruining it.

I just did this mod front and rear. When you pry the cap off the existing breather, you'll see that it just has a spring inside that puts pressure on a rubber disc which cover the hole of the fitting. It only opens if the air pressure is greater in the diff than outside.

I just used 1/8" NPT brass fittings with a barbed end that I got at a hardware store for $1 each. The only problem I had was that they didn't screw in too far. I didn't run a tap through like some people have suggested since the thread size is different, but it looks like it has enough enagagement to stay put. I also haven't figured out what I am going to put at the other end of the hose. Right now it is just open hose, up in the tail light area for the rear, and up near the wiper motor in front. I didn't want to spend $8-10 on a breather for that end if I can make something myself-- but I'm still thinking about it.

For right now I don't plan on going through any water that is higher than my windows, so I should be safe. And I also don't see much dust being able to migrate down that hose and into the diffs to make the oil dirtier than it already is.

Anyone come up with a super cheap breather end (I know 10 bucks is cheap for a mod, but I'm being a tightwad) for mounting up high? The most expensive part of all this that I had to buy was 12' of 1/4" ID vacuum hose @ .89 per foot.

 

What? I have seen them without the cap.. if you take it off and take the rubber pad and the spring out, its open.
Am I confused here?

(it also came off easy, if you just pry all the little spots it is held on by out)

 

Also the Nissan part # is 38323-C6010. They run about $4.75/per breather.

I have the Toyota one on mine, and the part #s and hose ID, and the final filter at the end can be found on page II of my mods section.

Pssssst, that is the only Fram part you will ever see on my rig too.
Other than that, I would not touch anything Fram.

 

You don't need any new parts from dealers. If you take your old breather in to a hardware store. You can find a barbed fitting for about a buck that fits pefectly and screws into the existing hole. Then you can attached a fuel line or simlar hose to the top of the barbed fitting and then run the hose up to wherever you're going to put it.

Use a hose clamp as well. When you get in some mud or water deep enough to need the raised breather, you don't want the hose pulling off.

If you try to pry the cap off the old breather, you'll have a tough time getting any hose on, that will stay when the going get's rough. The Nissan part is not necessary.

 

Your right, its not necessary. However, the Nissan part is good for those of us who like things to fit exactly right the first time and would like to avoid making 2 trips to the hardware store.

Besides, I wouldnt want to run the risk of cross-threading the top of my differential.

Anyway, at least we have given joshik a couple options.

 

I used the toyota part (that goes on the differential) from my intake plenium that is sitting around. I then ordered from the Toyota dealership, the cap for the top of the breather. The total cost of my mod $6.00
