Depending on how much you want to replace you could get a new exhaust for that much. I got my cat back with a flowmaster put on for a little over $150. So the question is how much are you looking to replace?

I went with the 40 series non delta (loudest) muffler so I heard a difference. Nothing obnoxious, but it did have a little drone on the freeway. My first car was an '84 Accord with a punched out cat and a cherry bomb muffler though so I thought the truck was pretty quiet. I'm not sure how the 4 cyclinder would sound with the same exhaust. I always got compliments on how mine sounded. I say how it sounded in the past tense because after I put my headers on the exhaust sound changed and you are just looking at the cat back. Sometime I miss the crisper sound I had with stock manifolds though. I got my muffler delivered to me for $60 off ebay and had a shop weld up a cat back pipe for about $100.
Have you checked out Corey's site? He has sound bites of some common mufflers on there.

Welding is better if they do a good job. I've gone to Austin's Pro Max twice and had good results with them. It's definitely the cheapier route.
