I've had this ticking all winter.


It does it when it's cold.
It goes away when it's warm.

It's coming from the exhaust side of the engine.

It lasts 2 minutes.

I know that there is some information out there about
piston slap which is caused by thermal expapansion which
goes away after the engine warms up a bit but does not seem
to do any other harm.

I know that 5W30 Mobile 1 and 15W40 Mobile 1 do not make it goaway.

I know that injector clearner and Mavel Mystery oil in the gas
do nothing.

Are there any more tests I can do to narrow it down ?

 

Every muti-valve engine that I have put synthetic in has done the same thing. After years of this in multiple vehicles, I just ignore it or turn the stereo up.

 

My 2001 2.7 did it right after I bought it 2 years ago but I switched to Mobile 1 syn and have not had any noise at all even on real cold mornings/ 10 degrees and lower. Mike
