Question Engine Swap?

G'day! Awesome site! I bought an '86 4Runner, 4cyl, Auto and am wondering if there is any easy way to swap out for a 6cyl without beating my head off the wall. Does anyone know if its worth trying to get a late 80's 6cyl to fit. Are engine mounts, transmission etc even compatible. Im exploring my options b4 I get the 22R rebuilt. Any help would be great. Thanks

try doing a search first, you wil find TONS of articles,

Your swap options are Small Block Chevy SBC, or supra 7M-GE or 7M-GTE, Ford HO, or the V6. and a few others i think... good hunting!

I have never seen a comment on tranny compatibility on here let alone anything other than I want a "insert engine here."

The auto should be the same is the one that comes behind the 3.0

That would be a cheaper way to go, but I have no idea about the motor mounts, etc. Check PBB.

I tried searching for a little while (not to say I was able to review the never ending articles on this site) and didn't see what i'm specifically looking for. My option right now is to have my 22R rebuilt (about $1500 CAD) or possibly swap out for something bigger. I was told by a relatively unreliable source that the 3.0 would bolt up with a different bellhousing to my existing tranny. I really don't want to drop 3 grand into my 4runner at this time and am just looking for someone with some experience.

well from someone who has a 3.slow - dont waste your time. I have a rare engine that actually gets good milage and is somewhat powerful, and it's still STUPID slow.

0-60 is roughly 12.9 in warm up mode after my mods...with sound system (~500lbs)
0-40 is ~6 seconds and
40-80 is still nearly 20 seconds.

I think the 22re can have a LOT more things done to it than the 3vze, but ease of drop in should be really easy and a decent way to get 20-30hp. Watch the headgasket issue though...

My vote is stay with the 22RE. It's not that much worse than the 3.0 on power, is lighter, gets better gas mileage, and is more reliable& cheaper to maintain.

Wouldn't a 22RE be a good option for the price range schooner's looking at? I love mine. Reliable, fairly cheap, parts are easy to find and tons of mods available.

i'd swap a 3RZ 2.7 from a tacoma in there. so far, they have a great reliability record(just like any other R motor), with as much power as the 3vze. i'd scrap that auto tranny though, manual gear is pretty much a bolt up fit

IMO I would stick with the motor you have. Build it up with a cam and some head work. Then add a header and do the exhaust and intake. By the time you are done, you should be at about the same power you would be at with the 3.slow. Don't put in a 3.slow. It's expensive, slow, gets bad gas mileage, and has a head gasket issue.

I wish I had a 22re with a 5 speed. It's so easy to work on. Plus the mods for it are plentiful and don't cost an arm and a leg.

But that's just my opinion...

Get a 3.4 S/C 5vze in there You won't regret it. But if money is a huge issue here, then I would reccomend rebuilding your 22RE
