engine swap
I've got an '02 2.7L Tacoma w/5spd trans.
I'd like more power to tow my travel trailer.
I thought of having a 6 cyl engine installed. Talked to a Svc Rep at my local Toyota shop. He said he thought it could be done, but it would run around 8K. Sound right? And that doesn't include the block.
And I just found more threads on engine swapping. Someone mentioned a supercharger for the 2.7L. I called my local Toyota shop parts dep't. They looked for it, and said they couldn't find anything on a supercharger for that engine.
Anyone got a part number for one?
Thanks.

I have a friend who just picked up a Tacoma with a 2.7 and factory supercharger. Under the impression they are very rare, and have not been in production.
However, he did seem to think TRD is going to start making them available again, if not already.
To swap a whole 3.4 in there, I think you are going to be looking at a new tranny and motor mount locations. Of course, new tranny might mean new transfer case as well... maybe driveshafts... ECM... wiring...

Caleb, Firefighter and Elvoda: Just got done searching, (for the last hour)
Nothing found about a supercharger for the 4 cyl. Sort of discouraging. Sure could use some extra oomph going up grades, towing the trailer.
Thanks anyway.

DudeBud, do you have an address for TRD? I thought I looked at all their stuff when I was searching last night. Saw a lot of 3.4 stuff, but nothing in the way of a supercharger for a 2.7.
I did check Alpine. $3120 is a little heavy.

FYI,
not being a mechanic, I visited with one for awhile.
My problem is getting up long grades while towing my TT.
He said a blower will add the horsepower, but it's going to be hard on the engine, because the internals, (pistons, valves, etc) on my truck aren't built for the stress a supercharger puts on them. He also said a blower may also give me better gas mileage around town, if I just 'cruise', but when I get heavy on the gas pedal, there'll be a big change.
Finally, he said I probably wouldn't see a big difference in speed/power (when towing), between a 3.4 and my 2.7. I live in Western Az, and in the summer we go up to Flagstaff, in the Pines. There's a 5-8 mile, 6% grade in one spot that's a killer. Can't get over 30mph, and that's an example of why I wanted something with more oomph.
Think I'll just 'live with it'.
Thanks for all your help.

I would improve the intake/exhaust, drop one size diameter on your tires and put higher octane fuel in the tank in advance of a tow. The free flowing engine will produce up to 10% more HP, smaller tire diameter will keep revs up and put out more torque and HP plus the high octane fuel will keep the knock sensor from going off and retarding your timing which will help retain power. All for less than $500! If ya got more dough, put on a header and go one step cooler on spark plugs.
