Engine speeds up when heat is on?

I have a 98 2wd Taco with the small 4 cyl and its getting pretty cold here in CT. Now when I turn on the heat (more specifically the fan) it sounds like the AC compressor kicks on. The engine speeds up and lurches the truck a bit (its an auto). If I turn the fan off it stops and it doesnt happen all the time. Any ideas? Is this normal? Thanks.

Is the A/C on? Many of the Toyotas will also kick the compressor on when your climate control setting is in the defrost mode but the A/C indicator won't light up. The idle speed will increase when it does. Pop the hood and turn on the fan. You should be able to see if the compressor starts.

If you have it on defrost then yes, the AC does cycle and yes, it is totally normal.

Having the compressor kick on when i turn on "Defrost" is fine by me. You can't defrost ˟˟˟˟˟ by blowing moist air on the inside of the window... I could never figure out why my old domestics didn't do that. But then, that's one of many reasons I didn't like my domestics...

My 95' Olds Did it intermitently...
Sometiems It would turn on the AC on defrost mode...
And sometimes I would have to turn it on manually...

Now I don't have to worry about it...
Gotta love Yotas!!!
