i got an 01 taco double cab with a 3.4 about a month ago and within the last couple days it has been starting to smoke when i start it up once it sits for over a half hour or so. the smoke goes away after a couple minutes. its blue so i know that its burning oil. i took apart the intake tube and noticed it was full of oil so i figured maybe it was the pcv valve so i got a new one and cleaned everything out now the oil is coming back in the intake. could this be anything besides the valve seals or rings. its got about 130,000. i was thinking of trying to find somewhere that has an engine flushing machine. could this help or is it a waste of money?

 

Don't flush it. Do a compression & leakdown test. This wil tell you if it's rings or valves. Leaking rings can pressurize the crankcase forcing oil into strange places.

IMHO your head gasket is JUNK

motor is about to sieze any day now. get it fixed asap.


or the rings are toast. anyway this is soon to be engine fatal. I give you 2000 miles or less

 

the head gasket shouldnt have anything to do with it burning oil and the coolant level has not moved

 

um yeah head gasket certainly can cause pressure in the crankcase pushing oil through the pcv
but it's probably a piston and ring job you are looking at

 

Usually blue smoke on start-up,and goes away shortly after start-up is either sludge...pull a valve cover and look...or valve guide seals..

If you said you have smoke out of tailpipe while driving and it didn't stop..I would lean towards rings

FYI..the oil in the intake is normal..its the PCV valve routing the crankcase blowby into the intake to be reburned........If it got stopped up you would see seals leaking and possibly blue smoke while driving(getting past the valve guides)

 

X2 on the valve guides.. Usually once a vehicle sits the oil drains down the worn guides and burns off in the first minute or two after starting. You can do the leak down test etc to be sure but that's my guess. If you have the head done depending on the condition of the bottom end it can cause blow by if the rings are going too. If it were a domestic I'd say do the whole thing but since it's a yoda take a look at the cylinder walls and look for ridges at the top. If the ridges are pronounced then a bottom end rebuild may be in order. If not then you may get away with a valve job.

 

i know there should be oil in the intake but there shouldnt be near as much as whats in mine. So are valve guides a common thing to go out on the 3.4s

 

if your 01 is already buring oil i'll tell you that you have prolly beeen very abusive to it...and or your not changing the oil on time....or your just unlucky but i highly doubt that... you done a compression test yet? what are the numbers? DO YOU HAVE THE CORRECT PCV VALVE IN IT!!!! It has to be the one exactly made for the truck or else you solve nothing!!! PCV VALVES ARE NOT UNIVERSAL!!!! GET THE CORRECT ONE!!!! Other than that.... yea

 

if you would have read the original post you would have saw that I JUST BOUGHT IT and yes ive taken care of it since ive had it i changed the oil right away with synthetic did the timing belt water pump and every other normal thing im pretty sure there isnt much more i could have done. i have a 4runner with a 3.0 with 230,000 miles and ive NEVER had a problem with it that should tell you i take care of my stuff

 

and yes it has the right pcv valve on it unless toyota gave me the wrong one but i highly doubt that since its identical to the one that came off it

 

You just bought the truck.... didn't see that part lol but ok well prolly who ever had it before you then was not very nice to it.... didn't do things like they were supose and then sum.... would highly recommend compression test to really get an idea of anything else you may have bought a truck of a very abusive person.... was it a deal truck?

oh...well even old people mess up.... but yea did you reset the computer when you changed the PCV valve by any chance? You prolly should have but by know the computer prolly relearned it....

 

this should give you guys an idea of how much oil is coming in the intake


and all this is from under 300 miles

 

Wow! I think you have a serious problem that needs to be addressed, SOON!

 

From what I hear up there in Wa. you can get a used engine installed for like 1400-1600 total so worst come to worst!

 

The oil I was talking about would be a thin coat inside the intake manifold..past the throttle body..

You most definitely have a problem there..

You might have a sludge monster there..I would pull the right valve cover(passenger side) and inspect...

 

i would pull the valve cover(one with pcv valve in it and see if the passage bellow the valve is plugged or blocked try anther pcv valve you don't always get working parts for parts stores..... hows the pcv hose? is there any codes? check engine light?
