Engine Rebuilds

My runner is almost at 200k and I'm starting to save a little here and there for the engine/trans rebuilds etc. The shop I like here in sac quoted 2500-3500 to rebuild the top of the motor and 3500 for the auto tranny. I was looking for advice on what you guys have done when it comes time to either junk your ride or replace major running gear.
I bought the truck with 185k and it's been very well maintained. I expect to be in the 300k club before I have to do any of this stuff but the tranny acts a little odd every now and then and it motivated me to start planning ahead. I'm in sac so I'd like to know if there are any shops you guys like or vendors for parts etc. Thanks, looking forward to the input.

IPT for the tranny, wait till your motor blows before you do anything to it, then have it built for boost, turbo it, and you'll never look back.

$2500-3500 to rebuild the head? are you serious? You can probably get a full re-manned long block for that much.

is that $3500 for the trans for a rebuild on your current one or a new one or a rebuilt unit?

You are getting quoted way too much for an engine rebuild, especially if it's for the top end only. You should be able to get a long block for the 3.4 (includes the head and block) for right around $2000.

Check into Putney's custom machine in Chico California. They specialize in Toyota engines. Talk to Jim...he knows his stuff. Can also check out their web site.

I really don't know about the auto tranny so I can't say if that is a good price or not.

$2500-3500 is to rebuild the top end, not just do the head gaskets, that would include a head rebuild or replace. Thanks for the info on Putney's, Ill call them, I'm from Chico so it'll be an excuse to go home. The $3500 for the trans is for a reman from Toyota. Love the comments keep them coming.

you can get a brand new head for less than 400 from engnblr that's fully assembled. so figure in $2100 to do a head gasket job? I think not. lol. still too high especially when they are not furnishing a brand new head but even if they do still too high.

3500 doesn't sound too too bad to have a re-manned unit and installed since most complete rebuilds will cost you over $2000.

Update

Wow, Putney's in Chico quoted the rebuild top to bottom at 2500.....thanks so much for the reference. I'm gonna do some more homework and probably end up using them.
