engine noise

I have a 2002 4runner and its has 36,000 miles almost. Also its up to date with service at the dealer. Does anyone know about a clicking sound in the engine when it is started also sometimes in reverse. It sounds more like a clicking gas stove not really like the pinging valve noise if you guys know what I mean. Any thoughts appreciated thanks in advance

I would just take it to the dealer, it should be covered under warranty.

If you took it to a Toyota dealer for service, there's a good chance that little if anything was ever done to it.

You might have a bad lifter. What's the oil level look like?

I'd change the oil and filter - do it yourself so you know it really gets done. Don't use heavy oils like 10W/40, 20W/50. I wouldn't go heavier than 5W/30 in your motor.

Drive it for a 100 miles or so, then add a can of engine flush. Follow directions on can of flush. You'll drain the oil and change filter again. You may need to do this a few times.

If the vehicle was dealer-maintained, you're oil likely wasn't changed. They put a number on it, park it in a corner, let it collect dust during the day, then hand it back to you at 5pm with a $30 bill. This goes on all of the time.

The lifters are solid on a 2002 not hydraulic.

Couple of things:
1) could be an exhaust leak
2) could be a valve needs shimming
3) the evap canister has been known to tick too (there is a recall for that)
4) could be an arcing of a wire (not likely tho)
