Hey guys, I recently purchased a 97 4Runner, and have been looking at getting a TRD SC for it. My question is what do most people use to tune with? Is there a company that makes stand alones? Thanks for the input.

I've heard good things about the FTC to control ping.

 

Ummm... what are you expecting to be able to do, modify the ECU tables directly and programatically? I've never seen anything like that for our trucks. By all accounts, the ECU is sealed. The code in the ROMs is encrypted, and you'd have a heck of a time reversing engineering it. There's no external access through the OBD ports like you'll find on other mfg's vehicles. This is why "we" run piggybacks.

If you want that level of control, then you're looking at replacing the ECU with one of the aftermarklet wide-open ones. That's just short of insanity, but I've definitely thought of doing it. Figure on building up your own wiring harness and spending a good amount of time setting up the ECU to deal with the ignition "fun", not to mention the tranny.

If you're reconsidering a piggyback, then there're basically two that people here have experience with, the SplitSecond FTC line and the PerfectPower SMT line.


edit: One more option... There's also the "TRD 7th injector" system, but that's basically there to fix the ping and lean-out issues. It's NOT programmable in any way.
