God bless the guy who made the decision to put the e-lockers in the TRD Tacomas. It's my favorite thing about the truck, as well as the most practical offroad "accessory".
Someday I hope to ARB the front, but for now the e-locker does the business, and does it well!

Had one in my 98 4Runner Limited, have one in my 01 Tacoma. I'm glad they brought it back for the new 4Runners (Trail Edition). Wish they would've added a front as well...
BTW, I agree that I don't think people know what this is for. I once spoke to a guy who had a 98 Tacoma and mentioned that he thought the rear locker was a big POS. I asked why, and he said that he locked the rear going up a snowy canyon road and he said it nearly spun him off of the road.

My brother in laws 98 limited 4runner had one but one weekend he went to vegas and someone stole it, the ecu, all the wiring and the switch. The next weekend they installed it in my 95 pickup.
I told him what happened and to this day he still doesn't believe me. I don't think he even knew where the switch was.

I found a complete rear axle setup w/ E-locker nearby --- about 130k miles on it.
Question is, how many miles is too many?
Are these diffs easy to rebuild? Maybe I can refresh it before it goes in the truck?

The elocker I had picked up had that many miles on it and I've had no problems.

130k is nothing just change the oil..... but are you swapping rear diffs between like-vehicles? Compatible differential housings?

I have one in my 04' Tacoma TRD. I did the gray wire modificating, allowing me to use the locker in 2-hi, 4-hi, and 4-low. Not just 4-low like it was set up from the factory. Great mod complimenting a great locker!

Mine doesn't. I added an ARB. Life is good with a locker.
What are you going to use your 4runner for? If you are going to wheel with it sooner or later you'll want a locker. When you start going thru harder obstacals and Whoop D Doos you'll notice that a 4runner with IFS will lift tires and you will be 3 wheeling, when it starts to unload and rock onto the end with a tire in the air you will loose traction. When an open diff has a tire in the air the one on the ground will not have any power. If you have a wheel on both axles in the air you will not go anywhere. This is where a locker saves you, even with a tire in the air the other will drive with the same power.
