One of the new Toyota that was just released has dual vvt-i (0-60 in 6.6 sec). This engine is based on the 4R/Taco/Tund 4L V6, I wonder what the power number would be if it has bi VVT.....

 

are talking about the new avalons? what do u mean by bi VVT?

 

I believe VVT-i stands for Variable Valve Timing-intelligence, or something like that. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

"Dual" puts a vvt-i "mechanism" on both the intake and exhaust cams, instead of just the intake cam.

 

That is exactly what a toyota tech told me the other day when I inquired with him about the new Dual VVT-i found on the new 3.5 liter V6 in the 2005 Toyota Avalon and what it meant. Man, that car is the honestly the most awesome car I have ever seen. Toyota has done an outstanding job on it. I am sincerely unbelieveably impressed (don't get me wrong - I'm a truck guy - but it's a hell of a car).

One of the things VVT-i does is it doesn't increase Peak torque or horsepower by a whole lot over not having it, but it is really good at broadening and flattening Torque and Horsepower curves as well. So you may only have xxx horsepower, but you will have a higher percentage of that xxx horsepower at other RPM's other than peak. I would imagine putting Variable Valve timing on the exhaust valves would influence the exhaust so that scavenging occurs more efficiently throughout the RPM curve. I can only speculate and theorize that this will broaden and flatten the torque and horsepower curves even more. And it's probably one of ther reasons Toyota has managed 280 horsepower out of a 3.5 liter V6.

 

0-60 in 6.6 is impressive for a SUV liike a 4runner. my moms has it and it hauls, way better than all the hondas i see here in southern california. the v-8 4runner with the supercharger is the fastest production SUV too. they did a comparision between the 4runner and that porsche suv

 

Yeah, Car and Driver really likes the new Avalon. Sounds like a nice ride.

Considering a swap are we?

I was thinking its probably possible to swap the 3.5 heads onto the 4.0 and make a frankenstien with a huge power band.

 

The 0-60 time is for pretty fast for an Avalon, its bigger than the Maxima but it can run with the Nissan and gets better mileage too - its even more efficient than the V6 Camry......so its got V8 power but V6 fuel economy. I drove an older Avalon with 210hp and thought it was really peppy, so with 70 more horse you're talking about whiplash acceleration for a Toyota sedan.
