downgrade 16" to 15" rim?

I have a 1996 TR4 with the factory 16" aluminum wheels and I was wondering if it was possible to wit a 15" rim on it. I doubt it but I don;t know for sure so I figured I'd ask here. If anyone would know you guys would! I ask because I have the opportunity to get a good deal on some used winter tires on 15" rims. As always your helps appreciated. Thanks.

check your door jam sticker and see what it says. if it says 15 on there, you should be OK.

or why not ask the person youre wanting to by the wheels off to have a test fit to see if they clear? ...unless they're not local of course.

Some were factory equipped some were dealership equipped.

The only way to find this out is to physically look at the clearance of the rim and the caliper. Turn your wheel out all the way, and get under there and look.

I considered doing the same thing when I got my runner since I already had 15" mud tires from a previous vehicle. After doing some research I found I'd need new calipers and rotors. Even at used prices I didn't think it was worth it. Not to mention the hassle of the swap.

Not always true. If your looking at specifric wheels, this stuff may apply. But I know that the wheelers 15" steelies fit over the calipers on the 16" equipped trucks. As long as you dont have VSC. Which is only on 4Runners, if you have VSC, no you definitely WILL NOT fit 15's. But the wheelers do fit, and a few other rims supposedly fit, and even more can be made to fit by grinding the caliper, I highly recomend AGAINST this, because the fluid passages are VERY near the surface of the caliper. Good Luck.
Oh, and if you want to check out the wheelers rims, they are pretty cheap, and here they are.. http://www.wheelersoffroad.com/tacomawheels.htm

But he does have a 4runner, so they wouldn't fit regardless!

The hassle of fitting 15's in not worth it. Stick with the 16"

Without knowing what type of rims those are I think it's almost impossible to say if they'd fit over your calipers or not without test fitting them. If you are going to buy them and won't have a chance to test fit first, then I'd buy the tires assuming you'd need to find/buy different rims. You might find someone on YT selling a set of rims in the classifieds, but I'd also call the salvage yards because they'll often have sets for your truck lying around (also check the yards in the states). If the deal isn't worth it unless the rims are good too, then I'd just pass on them.

I use this for finding used parts in both Canada and the US:

Do all 4Runners have VSC? I heard that not all did, so some 4 Runners can still fit the 15's...and I have never heard of ANY Tacoma with VSC...

Yeah I don't think there going to work out. FYI the rims are off a pathfinder. Just plain old steelies. Thanks for all your input guys!

15's are everywhere. Find one and try it on one side. It would only take 15 minutes of your time.

If it works, congratulations. You can now buy cheaper tires for the rest of your vehicle's life. Seriously, that would be a good thing.

Not all 4Runners came with VSC, in fact in 96 no 4Runner came w/ VSC.

If no VSC, then theoretically at least the Wheelers 15's fit, but I know they are made spefically for these trucks and 4 runners, but that means other 15's may fit also. Good luck!!
