door switch panel illumination 97 limited

ever since ive owned our 97 limited the door switches have not lit up except the "auto" switch on the drivers door for the window. kinda annoying beins its the flagship of my fleet... ive checked fuses, and the other switches on the other 3 doors, and on the console also dont light up telling me its probalbly not the switches themselves.

can anyone tell me if they have a similar rig and if they are infact suppost to light up??

You have intrigued me so I pulled the assembly on the 99 to check it out. Only the auto switch has a light so it appears no, the others are not meant to light up. Same for the 96 (pretty easy to pull and look).

I think I remember some one putting blue LEDs in all their window switch buttons years ago. I don't remember how they did it but it turned out really nice and seemed to be a sound installation if I remember correctly.

There's an empty space where the button can be lit in the ones without lights. The lighted one had a little rectangular bit that the light was down in. I only confirmed my curiosity and didn't pull the whole mess apart. Hubby took the camera for some Volvo nerdery or I'd have taken pics. It's small but I could see someone doing it as you said, with LEDs. Getting the assembly out is super easy, I was able to lift up the front side first with my fingers. Pop the front loose and slide it forward to release the rear.

I asked this questions some time ago and was upset at the same answer. You would need to have some electrical and soldering knowledge if you want to add some lights in there. Otherwise, you're stuck with the rest of us. Just upgrade all the other lights to LED's and you'll forget all about them lol

I think I remember what you're talking about but not sure who it was. I'm also not sure if it might have just been a 2nd gen 4Runner. I think all the switches on their door panels light up, not 100% sure though.

that should be an easy 5 minute fix to replace a single #74 bulb behind the climate control faceplate
