Shortly after I bought my '99 4Runner I started getting a check engine light. I brought it into the local Boston Toyota dealership and they said I had a bad MAF. I paid the aforementioned $450 to replace it, then went on to have to replace both O2 sensors and one of my catalytic converters over the ensuing 18 months before the light finally stopped coming on. All told, i cost me more than $2,100 to get my car to pass emissions here in MA.
I've also had to replace by rear wheel bearings (twice, due to shoddy work) and both U-joints. It runs like a top now, but the previous owner must have deferred all the maintenance on it.

Do you know which code you were throwing? It sounds like 420, whcih I have as well.
BTW, autozones and advance auto's here will read the codes for free. Or I can read them for you.

heh can anyone explain why toyota wants us to use MP grease on u-joints and Moly/lithium on the double cardon joint? Amount of load on the u-joint vs on the cardon?
Gonna assume here if you don't have the cardon then you would use the MP on everything?
Not that it matters to me. I have had no problems sing the above mentioned stuff on any of my trucks.

Buy a couple tubes of Amzoil synthetic grease with Molydenum. Then don't think about it anymore.

I just hopped under my truck to grease them and after about 1 pump from the gun heard cracking noises coming from the seals. Is it supposed to make this noise?! its been about 50k since it was done last and that sounds freaks me out.

The moly provides lubrication even when dry. If I were you, I'd just pick up some Moly-lube. It is not expensive, and then you don't have to worry as much.

I went through all but one of my Zerk fittings tonight (got too dark and cold, I'll get that last one later) and purged most of the old grease out and replaced it with Lucas Marine grease. As you who have undertaken this endeavor, you know it is quite messy. I got most of the grease up, but didn't get it all. What's the best way to clean these areas up? I was thinking soap and hot water and a toothbrush, probably my roomie's. Or could I hit the surface with degreaser? I'm hesitant to do this because that stuff can seep into pretty small crevices.
