Don't do a j-turn in a TRD Taco
This BLOWS! I'm fine, but my truck is totaled. I can't believe that I flipped my truck. I've done that move a thousand times in Rental cars, SUVs, even 15PAX Vans.....xxxx!!!!!
The Wife saw the whole thing and is NOT Happy!

1. stop vehicle immediately (skidding is likely)
2. reverse full speed
3. disengage clutch
4. engage emergency brake simulatneously w/ step #5.
5. w/ left hand, turn steering wheel from 12 o'clock position to 6 o'clock (clockwise for left j-turn, counter-clockwise for right j-turn)
6. before complete 180 rotation, return steering position to 12 o'clock and release the parking brake. (at 90 degrees)
7. shift into first and engage clutch upon reaching full 180 and accelerate away from danger.
It's a dangerous move in any vehicle, let alone something with a high center of gravity.

Great explination Bighead !
It's also called a "bootleggers turn." Though I take exception to the "dangerous move" remark.. But, your spot on about the cg comment. Doing it in a Surburban is really interesting/fun.
BTW: Disclaimer- If anyone wants to try this, go rent a car... It is hell on your tires.

Geez, I hope the driver was ok.
Reminds me of my high school days back when I had my 89 honda accord. I was infamous for my "James Bond Slide". Basically, just find a wet pavement surface or gravel, get going, then yank the e-brake and throw the wheel to the left/right. Best one I ever did was a 360* turn. That car had absolutely no e-brake when we got rid of it.

i've done literally almost 1000 j-turns in my old 88 volvo, just go find a dirt parking lot and spin donuts and pull the e-brake all day long like that
that volvo has seen just as much off road action as my 4runner

hehe, in my Datsun 510, all I need to do is throw it into reverse, gas it, snap the steering, (no e-brake needed) let her spin , then let go of the wheel and shift into first as it comes around, grab the wheel and gas it. I can do this move and still stay in my lane, except for when it's sideways of course.....
Never try it in a high CG vehicle, if the tires grab you flip!

When I was a mechanic we did all kinds of crazy manouvers in the rentals before we returned them. Always just found an open parking lot nearby and had some fun. Only go introuble one time when 4 of us tore the tranny pan off a corrola while offroading.....we launched it off a huge rock. No biggie tho, just brought it back, beat the pan back into shape with a BFH, welded up the giant hole down the middle, filled her up and brought it back to the rental place. Worked fine, just the underside was a complete mess. NEVER buy a rental vehicle!!!

I do it in my civic all the time and alot in the mustang I used ot have, e brank wasnt necessary in either, just as it starts to turn, stomp the brakes and you get thrown into a quick spin. easiest in the mustang cuz it was auto, just gas/turn/brake/pull stick back hard/gas and its over, and no signs of flipping in a cra. man I would have loved to have been there and watched his wife watch him do that, but it is a sad thing to see.
